5.0 out of 5 stars Weightless
A beautiful record, with the polyrhythmic complexity and sonic adventure one would expect from Henry Cow's guitarist, but carried off with the lightest of touches and a complete absence of pomp or seriousness. One (vinyl!) side is with the Swedish band Sammla Mammas Manna, the other with the Muffins; both bands provide sterling support without any prog heaviness. Many...

2.0 out of 5 stars Speechless is better
This and Speechless came out very close together and were Frith's first proper solo projects after Henry Cow and Art Bears.
This might be Fred Frith heresy, but I've always preferred Speechless by miles. Gravity has plenty of cleverness, lots of rhythmic changes and more obvious tunes. But it doesn't have the same depth and passion for me. No track stands well in the...

Many sounds come from world or folk musics, and some of the rhythmic quirkiness sounds like folk dances rather than jazz or 'serious' music. Attentive dancers will frequently be caught out, but this is such a musical, joyous record that leaping around seems the most natural reaction. Gravity is what this music defies.

5.0 out of 5 stars The great Fred Frith, 28 Oct 2010
This review is from: Gravity (Audio CD)
What can one say about a CD that breaks the boundaries of music
and sounds fresh today as it did when it was recorded.
Fred Frith has been a sonic explorer and experimentalist for
decades and this CD represents his genius in a melodic and
playful context.
There is a collision of world music and his experimental ideas
along with melody and delighful irreverance.
After getting this CD and listening for the first time in many years,
its a joy to hear greatness once again.
I don't hear very often.

This might be Fred Frith heresy, but I've always preferred Speechless by miles. Gravity has plenty of cleverness, lots of rhythmic changes and more obvious tunes. But it doesn't have the same depth and passion for me. No track stands well in the memory apart from an ironically distorted Dancing in the Street (although I'll concede that Spring Any Day Now makes good happy sense on a light March day). The whole album has always left me feeling edgy - maybe I should have tried dancing about like the cartoon people on the original album cover..
