This is a very fine and hugely enjoyable disc of some of Couperin's loveliest chamber music. It includes the Première and Deuxième Suites for viola da gamba and continuo, and three pieces for chamber ensemble: La Sultane, Le Dodo and La Superbe. All are great pieces, and all are beautifully played.
The chamber works feature Skip Sempé's ensemble Capriccio Stravagante who made a series of terrific recordings for DHM, of which this from 1996 is one. Sempé is a fine musician and a very experienced master of this repertoire, and he brings a performance of real authority from his ensemble. Jay Barnfeld is a really good gamba player and his performance stands up very well beside, for example, the great Wieland Kuijken's. The sound of his instrument is beautiful and the recording is excellent. All in all a really top-quality disc which is warmly recommended.
