5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 25 April 2009
This review is from: Mendelssohn: Cello Sonatas (Audio CD)
For reasons best known to the record companies (but no doubt devised to increase sales), the two Mendelssohn 'cello sonatas very seldom are coupled on one CD. So it is a refreshing change to find them together on this excellently recorded Deutsche Grammophon offering.

Instrumental balance is good and Maisky gives a fine performance. So too does Sergio Tiempo who's playing I prefer to the often unnecessarily aggressive style of his former mentor, Martha Argerich. All around, this is an excellent performance of an interesting programme and has my recommendadtion. However, to my mind at least, it does not quite equal the superb Sebok/Starker recordings of the sonatas.

This review is from: Mendelssohn: Cello Sonatas (Audio CD)
Mendelssohn wrote two brilliant cello sonatas that are worthy to stand with those of Beethoven, Brahms, Faure, and Debussy which are possibly heard more often, not to mention the Arpeggione ... maybe it's because there are so many great ones that Mendelssohn's are somewhat neglected, because they really are a kind of perfection - spirited, tuneful, and bringing out the respective qualities of the instruments. No. 2 is one of the absolute plums of the repertoire, relishing different piano sonorities and with a most striking Bachian slow movement, while the faster movements have that fleet grace that no one else can quite match except early Beethoven, which finds electric projection under the nimble fingers of Sergio Tiempo. What a fantastic player ... Of course Maisky is amazing, but everyone knows this - he seems to be ablaze with the expression of the music. His arrangements of some Songs without Words are a beautiful addition, as if written for the cello, they sound so natural. Anyone who loves them in the original piano version should hear these versions, which make me think the composer would have been very pleased to hear his inspiration recast in these new sounds. It is altogether an exciting release.
