4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation, 1 Jan 2003

This cd contains every track from the bands first eponymous album and the cream of 'Sheet Music' their second. I would rather the second album had been given complete but one shouldn't quibble when the music is this good. 'Donna', 'Rubber Bullets','Wall Street Shuffle' - some of the best singles of the seventies sit side by side with material like 'Sand In My face' about a nine stone weakling who subscribes to a body building course to get his own back on a bully, and with lovely ballads such as 'Fresh Air For My Mama' and 'Old Wild Men'. The band were practically obsessed with the America of rock'n'roll, movies and comics and it all finds its way into some of the most musically inventive songs of the period.
If I have one reservation in recommending this album, it is that 'Two For Ten' includes the whole of both albums. Aside from that, this remains a superb selection from a great band.

Back in 1972 I watched 10cc's debut performance of "Donna" on TOTP. I was hooked. Fortunately the BBC missed the inference of the lyric and the ball was off and rolling. Saving my newspaper-boy earnings laid my hands on the brilliant self titled debut album. Sophomore effort "Sheet Music" followed in due course and was even better' with a harder edge, but maintaining the wit and musicality of the first.

All of the 1st album is here and 6 of the 10 tracks from the second. Absolutely fantastic. The main problem is you will need to buy the second also,as no-one should be without the missing tracks; Hotel, Baron Samedi, Sacro-Iliac and Oh Effendi.

The additional tracks are good, not great, the b-sides being better than those previously not issued.

A pleasure to listen to good music with a bit of humour to differentiate it from the crowd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the best, 21 Jan 2014

In 1975 10cc left Jonathan King's UK label after two albums, and he's been issuing or licensing those tracks on compilation / 'best of' albums ever since. I remember buying '100cc' (the singles from the first two albums plus their b-sides) at the time their third album came out. This is yet another one.

It has everything on their first album, '10cc', plus the b-sides for those singles, and most of their better second album, 'Sheet Music'. So it's missing Hotel, Baron Samedi, The Sacro-Illac and Oh Effendi from the album, plus the two b-sides 18 Carat Man of Means and Gismo My Way. At least four of those are worth having, and at least two are better than some of what is included.

So what you probably want is The Complete UK Recordings which has the lot, plus assorted alternative versions of the singles. Add 'The Original Soundtrack' and 'How Dare You' and you've got all of 10cc when they were great, i.e. before Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left.

10cc were at their brilliant best in the early years with the variety of songs created by Creme, Godley, Stewart and Gouldman. One of the best, and most under-rated, bands of their era, 10cc are up there with Supertramp and Queen, and this cd is the perfect introduction to their early years
