This review is from: In the Halls of Awaiting (Audio CD)
Take 2 parts Dark Tranquillity, 1 part Opeth and 1 part In Flames and what have you got .... ? No, I'm not answering that ..... its a rhetorical question ...tch... For those not familiar with these bands then this album is a really nicely balanced blend of catchy metal riffs with the occasional soft acoustic passage and the Scandinavian trademark combo of death plus softly-spoken vocal styles.
Echoing what someone else wrote in their review, Insomnium already sound like professionals despite the fact that that this is their first album! That should say a lot.
A must for anyone who likes heavy or extreme metal.
Simple as that.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the fires of the Emperors demise comes this, 24 Sep 2002
This review is from: In the Halls of Awaiting (Audio CD)
Most people, with the exception of a few purists, have recognised Emperor as being the ultimate in black metal, unbeatable, end of story. But times change and now the astonishing sound that was created is gone, split into other bands and now only a memory trampled into the ground by a wave of shoddy black/death metal bands.
Actually, looking back at this, the band are probably quite releived. Because if they were still performing up there as the greatest black metal act, they would be shaking in their armoured boots at the prospect of facing them. To call this the best black metal release ever wouldn't be true, it doesn't quite have the emotion of Burzum, or the majesty of Emperor themselves, but its better than anything else the genre has ever produced. Darkthrone, Mayhem, Venom, all can stand aside in favour of this.
Stunning is the only word that touches how good this album is. Insomnium have a level of maturity in their music that most bands take many years to reach, its almost impossible to beleive this is only their first album. As musicians, they have talent surpassing anything I have heard in a long time, playing music of serious complexity perfectly. But this goes far beyond mere instrumental capability, there are heartbreaking emotions contained in each power chord, each hit of the drum. The lyrics are brilliantly written and fit the emotions perfectly. Best tracks are 'Ill-starred son' and 'Medeia'.
The tracks are not performed at the breakneck speed normally associated with black metal, but instead proceed at a more stately, measured pace that shows Insomnium have the power to create the blackest music with resorting to simply hammering it out.
In all, this is an essential album, not just for black metal fans, but for anyone with a passing interest in the heavier side of music. In fact, for anyone at all.
