5.0 out of 5 stars Delectable Mendelssohn Cycle From Ashkenazy & DSO, 22 Oct 2010

This cycle can take its place alongside those for Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Scriabin in the pantheon of recordings Vladimir Ashkenazy has made as conductor. Three well-filled CDs; no overtures, but an overtures collection won't be hard to source (I think Flor has a commendable one).

There is great warmth to the orchestra's sound and to the recordings, made in the Jesus Christus Kirche and the Schauspielhaus in Berlin. They may not have the bracing 'attack' of the BPO, but for Mendelssohn that is all to the good. The First is given a magically affectionate performance, to say nothing of the quicksilver renditions of the ever popular Italian and Scottish symphonies. Ashkenazy is also most persuasive in the sometimes undervalued Fifth and the Lobgesang won - I think - a top recommendation from the BBC in a survey, although I may be wrong about that.

I won't say Ashkenazy is the last word, or even that his strings have the depth or are as idiomatically sounded as some of his competitors; as an example, the second movement of the Fifth will divide opinion. But he's certainly not po-faced. There are favoured cycles out there by Abbado, Dohnanyi and Karajan, to name three, but I incline to the passionate but still affectionate response that is so much a part of Ashkenazy's musical make-up.

To conclude, a pretty much faultless Mendelssohn TRIO to set beside some very distinguished company. (If anyone has the lowdown on Haitink's LPO set, I'd be very interested.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Mendelssohn's complete symphonies Ashkenazy, 22 April 2010

This 3 cd set is a real bargain as all the perfomances are good. As regards individual symphonies I regard Numbers 1 3 and 5 as the best but Number 2 is also satisfactory. However, I like all the performances but if you want the best recording and performance of just one symphony you probably ought to look at the individual reviews but if you want all the symphonies at a reasonable price I would recommend this set of cds.
