5.0 out of 5 stars A privilege to watch
This DVD is a handsome testament to a remarkable episode in the annals of Antarctica exploration. It was filmed by the indefatigable Australian Frank Hurley. It is a fascinating glimpse back through time. We are made to feel like time travellers landing in a different time and place. The film covers that well documented expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914-16...

If you are interested in the exploration of the South Pole by Ernest Shackleton. Then this film is a must for you.
It begins with the start of the exploration and, goes on to show the ship becoming icebound. It covers how the men endured, and the decision to sail for help to Elephant Island.

5.0 out of 5 stars South, 1 May 2011
This review is from: South [1919] [DVD] (DVD)
This DVD is a revelation - fantastic quality of the images and very evocative. Bought it after reading Shackleton's account of his journey and it makes the perfect compliment. The absence of sound, if anything, serves to heighten the atmosphere. Beautiful scenes, have to keep reminding myself that the pictures and film comes only from the days when the weather was good - hard to get a grip on the level of hardship these people put up with.

Having just returned from South George, the resting place of Shackleton, i needed to read the full story.
This is a wonderful book which should inspire all men to marvel at the feats of these giants of their, or any other age.

as I had just read an account of the expedition it was brilliant to see that 1919 film and also the Kenneth Branagh film which I purchased at the same time. All three items were consistent with each other.

If you ever want to see first hand what the crew of the Endurance went through then look at this. I makes you appreciate the early pioneers of polar travel and their accomplishments.
