5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked and underrated masterpiece
Peter Sellers as Wee Sonny McGregor has to be one of the funniest and most venal characters in British films of the Ealing Period, one of his cleverest performances, switching from slapstick goonery to snide villainy in a display of his complete mastery of the craft of comedy.
In fact The Naked Truth is packed with the greatest British comedy actors playing ensemble...

This is a fantastic film and I was looking forward to watching it in DVD quality but I was to be disappointed--twice so far.
This is the second DVD of this film that I have purchased from 'Borders' and this is the second version which has been spoilt. Where there is a dark background in the film with a character in darkness--eg. Terry Thomas as he makes his way...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine and farcical slightly black 50's British comedy., 3 Mar 2012

I was introduced to this film as a Sellers fan and wasn't disappointed. The other leading actors also gave fine performances.

The plot revolves around a blackmail and consequently murder plots that get entangled.

The pace is quite quick for a 50's film.

If you liked Ealing Studios' "The Lady Killers" you'll probably like this film as well, that has a faster tempo but slightly less finespun.

I don't consider it to be a masterpiece, however it's well made and very funny at times.

Thankfully pretty well English subtitled with only a short trailer as an extra.

If for some reason you're not up to watching it all, don't miss the ending scene, as it's one of the best LOL endings without giving anything away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Truth Be Told, 2 Mar 2012

On the list of all-time great British comedians Peter Sellers is sure to be up there, but to be honest I'm not the biggest fan. When sitting down to watch `The Naked Truth' I was more interested to see Terry Thomas than Sellers. Turns out that the film is owned by neither of these comic actors, but instead it's the actress Peggy Mount who steals it. `Truth' is a classic style screwball comedy about a group of people all being blackmailed by the same man. This man, Nigel Dennis, is the editor of the sleazy magazine `The Naked Truth' and if they don't pay up their stories will be headline news.

As was often the case in a film containing Sellers he plays more than one part, or in the case of Sonny MacGregor, a man who plays more than one person in this film. His impressions are not great here, his Scot in particular being poor. It does not help that he is given an incredibly unlikable man to play. More sympathetic is Thomas as Lord Henry Mayley, he is a bumbling toff who is in over his head, but in many ways it's his own fault. Only Mount as Flora is truly sympathetic which makes her inability to murder a man even more amusing.

With so many of the characters not being likable `The Naked Truth' falls slightly flat. It is only when Flora's failures to kill are on the screen that the film comes alive. Things do get better towards the end when the conspiracy draws to a close and the real twists and turns of the screwball comedy can come alive. There are genuine moments of entertaining farce in the third act, but they do not overshadow the stodgy first act of unsympathetic role played by Sellers. A solid, if unspectacular, slice of Brit 50s comedy.

An entertaining film with an excellent cast. Blackmailer Dennis Price (a wonderful performance) targets a number of celebrities including Peter Sellers, Peggy Mount and Terry-Thomas (playing a rather dishonest Lord) who all have something to hide - Price threatens to reveal all in a scandal magazine he produces called "The Naked Truth". The celebrities decide to take steps...with hilarious results!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, 23 Aug 2010

This is one of the best in British comedy,an ensemble piece and acted with great gutso by the great Joan Sims. All performances are great especially Peter Sellers in his various disguises. There has been comments for a few people about the quality of the print of this film, my copy was great, perhaps they have improved the quality since the comments were made. The reason of the problem about the darkness of the scene involving Terry-thomas walking the plank and various other secenes on the river at "night" is because they shot the scenes using "day for night" eg filter on the camera lens to make the scenes dark and considering this film was made in the 1950's I can forgive the cameraman!!!
This is a great film and well acted by all, especially Peggy Mount and Joan Sims. I highly recommend this film.

This is one of the best of British comedy films. Dennis Price plays his smooth villain character superbly, Peter Sellers shows his genius playing many disguised parts, Terry Thomas is at his very best and brilliant supporting cast including Peggy Mount. Don't miss it!! Grahame Rich
