All the bands on the Constellation record label get compared to Godspeed You Black Emperor. It's silly really, because none of them are that similar (except for the lack of vocals). Fly Pan Am are no exception either. there are no orchestral strings in this record. as it says on the inside cover (great packaging too, by the way. a trademark of constellation records), the music is comprised of "basse électronique, countrebasse (doublebass), guitares électiques et préparées, orgues á vent (wind organs?), orgue électrique, percussions, piano, piano préparé, rythme électronique. evidently they're very different from godspeed. they have some slight similarities to 'do make say think', with the more prominant guitar presence, but they're a bit less sparten, with a lot more constant music; you dont get the long moments of silence or slow mono-instrument riffs. as to whether this is a flaw or a pro is your decision.
as mentioned by the previous reviewer, though, the "cd skipping" is quite annoying and pointless, and cost the cd a full star in my review... although looking at this type of music compared to any other, it seems a bit trivial to downgrade an album such as this one, while someone can rate a heavy metal cd that they'll listen to for about 4 months with 5 stars. you'll be listening to this cd for years. my advice: buy it

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of their work yet, 22 April 2002

Fly Pan Am's first two releases suffered from over-minimalism. They had a stripped down post-rock sound, but were often short on innovation. Add to that the lack of vocals and impenetrable franglais track titles, and you were hard pushed to find much to enjoy on them.
This release has more body to it. It's still basically post-rock drones, but fleshed out with additional layers of noise, which add extra tensions to what could easily become soporific. There's also some fashionable CD skipping thrown in for good measure (or maybe it's just my copy!), which was probably not needed. But all-in-all, this is their best release yet.
