Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier star in what is arguably Curtis's best (and least pretty-boy) film role. Two prisoners, one white and one black, chained together, attempt to escape a chain gang. Despite its strong moral message the film is not PC, but is the stronger and starker for the lack of gloss. Supporting characters are well delineated, with the prisoners encountering help and persecution from unexpected quarters. No-one who watches the first 10 minutes will not sit avidly through the rest of it

Tony Curtis in particular simmers and rages. You really get drawn in and want the characters to get away. The power of the performances is mesmerising. Modern cinema just doesn't have this intensity of characterisation and emotion. An action movie for grown ups

Like a lot of older films that have stayed with us, it's usually down to a good, if not simple, story that allows actors to show their craft.
This is why this film has stayed with us. Though I might not have rated Tony Curtis as one of the all time greats, Sidney Poitier's performance is outstanding. The more you see and hear him, the more you feel you understand him.
Do you know when you are seeing a great actor? Because they don't have to say a word. Think of Jimmy Stewarts eyes, just the way they move portrayed his emotions, and said more than any script. Poitier is in that category, though I would not place him above Stewart, who IMO is maybe the greatest actor ever.
It's a buddy story, but that doesn't do it credit. It's about respect, hope, desperation and on the side of the law; upholding justice rather than using any methods to hit a deadline.
A very good movie that will bear up to multiple viewings, in a way modern cinema just cannot emulate.

An amazing, action packed adventure, of a black man and a white! The film is about two convicts chained together with handcuffs!(symbolisim forced trust) on the run from the police and at each others throats at the same time, until they realise that if they are going to escape... they will need to develop a gift called trust! And even friendship!

Showing its age a little but pretty good film...the two stars worked well together.and its good black and white filming..look for the scene where they jump into the pit of water and mud.Its got a good ending i thought. and it made not a great, but a pleasant evenings viewing..see what you think.

One of the movies affected my childhood. In black and white. To my surprise first time in my life I came face to face with "Racism" It was educating. I am happy to have it in my collection.

This was a controversial film at the time in the 1950s as it was the story of two convicts one of Afro American origin and one White American origin hand-cuffed together as a crash in the van in which thery are riding crashes and gives them a chance to get out and escape. They, however cannot get away from one another and have to share and help one another despite themselves and their prejudice and hatred. One has to remember this is a film which reflected the prejudice of the time and has to be viewed from this point of historical context and so has an added interest to anyone interested in this era.

une amitié apparemment impossible entre deux prisonniers en fuite, un Blanc et un Noir dans les années 60. Film très émouvant, plein d'images fortes, belle leçon d'humanité.

'THE DEFIANT ONES' COULD HARDLY FAIL TO ENTERTAIN. SUPERB DIRECTION FROM THE LATE, GREAT STANLEY KRAMER AND EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES FROM TWO OF THE BEST ACTORS OF THAT GENERATION. SIDNEY POITIER AND TONY CURTIS PLAY CONVICTS WHO ESCAPE WHILE SHACKLED TOGETHER. TO MAKE A BREAK THEY HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER BUT THERES ONE PROBLEM, CURTIS HATES BLACKS AND POITIER HATES WHITES. THE STRUGGLE OF THES ANTI-HEROES IS PLAYED OUT IN PRISTINE BLACK AND WHITE THROUGH A NEVER ENDING LANDSCAPE OF SWAMPS AND HILLS. THE SUPPORTING PLAYERS ALSO PITCH IN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES BUT THIS IS REALLY A TWO MAN DEAL. BOTH WERE NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS BUT BOTH LOST OUT TO DAVID NIVEN FOR HIS ROLE IN 'SEPERATE TABLES'. IF YOU WATCH BOTH FILMS YOU WILL WONDER HOW.

This is an interesting movie from the point of view of the development of the craft of movie making. A story which reflects American rural society of the 1950's with a nice human content.
