5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific show, 27 Nov. 2011

This review is from: Birdman Of Alcatraz [DVD] (DVD)
This a true story shot when the main character was still alive and prisoner in Alcatraz.
The script is very well written and all scenes are directed and cut superbly. The two hours and a half this films lasts go by very quickly.
Burt Lancaster, Karl Malden, Telly Savalas, Thelma Ritter, Betty Field, ...all play their roles fantastically.
The transcript is digitally remastered and it is a pleasure to watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film about a true story, 12 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Birdman Of Alcatraz [DVD] (DVD)
Burt Lancaster plays the role of true-life killer Robert Stroud. Most of the film shows Stroud being detained in Leavenworth prison, as he was only later transfered to Alcatraz, and it was at Leavenworth that he developed his amazing interests in birds. Interesting fact but not in the film, the real Robert Stroud met the first black heavyweight champion of the world Jack Johnson, when he too was imprisoned in Leavenworth after coming back to the US from his exile for breaching the Mann Act.

Karl Malden always gives a first rate performance but the star of the show is Lancaster, a truly brilliant performance in surely his best ever film. The film length of 2hrs 23mins lends to the claustrophobic atmosphere and at times you feel as though you are in prison with Stroud, such is the way this fantastic filmography is shot. A pre-Kojack Telly Savalas (with hair) adds great support though at times a little bit hammy.

The dvd visually is good but the sound is a little disappointing, at times it sounds as though the actors have a lisp whenever pronouncing a word that has an "s" in it. That aside, it really is worth an evenings viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of all Alcatraz movies!, 10 Jun. 2013

True story that centred on Paul Stroud and the trust he left with his mother played by Thelma Ritta.Always living in hope that his mother can turn his conviction round as we go through the years with this incredible man whos love for birds became legend. In glorious black and white and a good turn by an early Telly Savalas appearance.Stroud starts off rescuing a small bird in solitary confinement which he nurses to recovery and thus brings him the name of"the birdman!"Infact the original story was not quite the same but none the less this is a touching story of a man coping with life inprisonment and surviving most of his life in a very small cell and discovering a love and passion for his feathered friends which became his own escape off the island"Alcatraz" in their flight to freedom.CLASSIC.

True story a bout. Stroud the bird man of Alcatraz , Some sterling performances from the cast especially from Karl
Malden and Lancaster the film tells the story from the side of the author
The film glosses over the fact that Stroud committed two murders including
One a prison guard and doesn't speak of any previous crimes I found it ironic that after several trials and appeals
That he was sentenced to life he then appealed that and the sentence was over turned
And he received the death penalty , ( bet he hadn't bothered) it was according
To the film that he only had that sentence commuted because his mother went to see
Mrs Wilson you will find more on that on the net. Good film but you won't find Stroud a
Very likeable character

A FILM CAN INFLUENCE A PERSON IN MANY WAYS. IT'S MAIN AIM SHOULD BE TO ENTERTAIN. BUT EDUCATION, EXCITEMENT, FEAR AND TITILATION ARE SOME OTHER ASPECTS. THIS FILM IS DEEP AND SLOW. IT SIDESTEPS THE REASON BURT LANCASTER IS IN PRISON. NOT HARBOURING ON PUNISHMENT, BUT THE CARE AND TREATMENT OF ANOTHER BEING. NOT AN EXACT RECREATION OF FACTS, BUT THE MAIN POINTS ARE WELL DEALT WITH. IT SHOWS HOW FELLOW PRISONERS, TELLY SAVALIS, CAN BE INVOLVED AND THE TREATMENT OF THE SITUATION BY HIS GUARD AND GOVERNOR. SHOWS ALCATRAZ IN ALL IT'S GLORY!! A THOUGHTFUL AND ENJOYABLE FILM.

The true story of Robert Stroud known forever as the bird man of Alcatraz, guilty of two murders he has his death sentence reprieved,he rescues a bird and takes a life long interest in ornithology. The acting is first class from everybody.According to people who knew Stroud this a romanticised view ,this is probably true, however it remains an entertaining film, and as well as Burt Lancaster Karl Malden and Telly Salvias are very good too

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BLACK & WHITE MOVIE---THERE IS LOT TO LEARN FROM THIS ONE, 24 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Birdman Of Alcatraz [DVD] (DVD)
GENERALLY I DONOT WATCH BLACK & WHITE MOVIES.I ORDERED BIRDMAN OF ALCRATZ FORM AMAZON U.K.I WAS EXPECTING IT TO BE A COLOUR MOVIE.INITIALLY I WAS DISAPPOINTED FOR INITIAL 15 MINUTES.AS THE MOVIE WAS PROGRESSING IT GOT MORE AND MORE INVOLVED.
I RATE THIS MOVIE AS A HIGHLY INSPIRATIONAL ONE.THIS ALSO SHOWS HOW A PRISONER DID WONDERS SITTING IN JAIL.THE BIRDS, BIRD DISEASES AND THEIR CURING DONE BY ROBERT STOUGE IS HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE.HE DID REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELD OF BIRD DISEASE.

I FEEL PITY FOR U.S. GOVERNMENT FOR NOT GRANTING PARDON TO THIS GENIUS PRISONER WHO COULD HAVE STILL DONE WONDERS.
PUNISHMENT IS NOT THE ONLY SOLUTION.SOME TIMES WE HAVE TO SEE OVER ALL BENEFITS TO THE SOCIETY AND HUMAN KIND.THE SAME IS APPLICABLE FOR ANIMALS & BIRDS ALSO.
WONDERFUL MOVIE--A MUST WATCH FOR GOOD NATURED AND EMOTIONAL PERSONS WHO FEEL HUMANITY IS BEFORE EVEY THING IN THIS WORLD.
