5.0 out of 5 stars Nu-Jazz has arrived.
Jazz is progressing. When you mention Jazz to anyone, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and that bloke from The Fast Show that says "Hmmmm, Jazz.....nice" automatically spring to mind. 1.0 out of 5 stars Beware ordering the vinyl edition direct from Amazon!
I ordered the vinyl edition of In Between in 2011 from Amazon directly as I was amazed they still had new copies available. The first copy I received was horrendously warped, and after sending that back for a replacement another was dispatched and was warped in the same places! Amazon customer service said they were looking into the issue, but short of putting it on a...

Jazz is progressing. When you mention Jazz to anyone, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and that bloke from The Fast Show that says "Hmmmm, Jazz.....nice" automatically spring to mind. So logically, Nu-Jazz is creating waves and is pushing the boundaries within the most experimental and skilled genre of music.
Nu-Jazz has been threatening to surface for a while. St. Germain have become popular through word of mouth, with a blend of French Deep house and down-tempo jazz, LTJ Bukem's Good Looking crew experimented with Jazzy Drum and Bass when Jungle was at its peak, and Giles Peterson is becoming ever more popular with his love for hip hop/jazz fusion and re-invented old skool classics from the likes of Minnie Ripperton (Les Fleur) and The Masters At Work.
Jazzanova continue the work of 4-Hero, Vikter Duplaix and The Cinematic Orchestra by exploring a more traditional set-up of live instruments, with hip hip/drum and bass beats and hip hop lyrics, keeping the synthesiser trickery more to the background (apart from on "Soon") and opting for a laidback sound with a focus on different instruments from track to track. It's quieter compared to 4-Hero's grand spectacular orchestral strings explosions and crescendos, with more emphasis on percussion.
The production is extraordinary. What Hi-Fi should be picking this up to test the latest £3000 amp. All sounds are crisp and the bass thumps cleanly throughout. A multitude of sounds all sit comfortably and repeated listening uncovers hidden sounds that add great depth and atmospherics.
Jazzanova are definitely mixing with the big boys.....nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzanova sizzling !!!, 17 May 2002

After Koop's Waltz for Koop Jazzanova Compost records have come up with an even better release for 2002 in In between. To my knowledge this is the Berlin groups debut. This is a superb album of contrasts and with sounds which echoe rhythms of 60's and seventies soul grooves, especially on the patchy yet sentimental opening track and my favourite track "Another new day" which end up sounding like across between The Dells Sing a rainbow to phsychadelic lazy jazz trips . There's chill out grooves urban raps and maestro Vikter Duplaixs soulful vocals, and other international guests including Ursula Rucker . From electronic breaks to a touch of eighties style jazz fusion. A diverse collection that sits in the category where dance meets nu jazz .I could see Inside out being one of the hottest dance albums of the year, stunning art work for the cover picture book style in this case , do judge this book bt it's cover!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, Brilliant!, 30 April 2002
This review is from: In Between (Audio CD)
Well, what can I say. This album has been long awaited, and I for one was worried that it would be made up of the many vinyl-only jazzanova singles, but thankfully, this is all new matierial. This is a slight departure from the normally house-based (albeit very alternative house) style of the jazzanova collective. "In Between" uses a diverse range of beats, while retaining the skippy, swung style of previous matierial. It uses a wide range of vocalists, but manages to blend their voices artfully with the beats, unlike other modern vocal music, which sounds more like 'songs' with a modern beat behind it. Tracks such as 'No Use', hopefully a single release, are a fantastic progression for the Compost stable artists, holding a large amount of appeal to more mainstream music fans, in fitting with their recent appearance on a multitude of TV programs. Jazzanova, unlike so many others, are actually able to avoid the classic criticism of modern programmed music, that it is simplistic and repetitive. In Between is a real album, not simply a collection of tracks, and really feels like the time spent creating it ws worthwhile. This is a must for all previous fans ,as well as all those who enjoyed less developed dance-crossover music such as Zero-7. Go Buy it today.

5.0 out of 5 stars deep grooves, 5 Aug. 2002

I think this album is superb, a true musical journey into the depths of introspection. I have read lots of the praises of the press and some of the negative ones as well. Basically this album isnt something you will get the first time you hear it. It is an intricate piece of work. So if you are looking for something to please the fickle look elsewhere, but for those patient listeners that like a variation in the mix, this is for you. I have listened to all of jazzanova's productions and this will please those who prefer musical growth over the predictable. Cheers Jazzanova,

The sound quality and production of this is unbelievable; it rivals the likes of miguel migs on sound craft. This is one of the best albums released of this genre in recent years and I still play it now! If you like jazz with a modern take then buy it before you no longer can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the Jazzanova remix album this is the one....., 30 April 2002

This review is from: In Between (Audio CD)
The race for album of the year is hotting up and this will be another contender. I must admit that I wasn't a big fan of the Jazzanova remix album but this is something else and perhaps more of what I wanted from them. Having said that this is their first SOLO album!
There are various styles on this CD that make it irresistable. I can be quite sceptical of a CD until I have given it perhaps 4-5 listens but this has got me partially on the first but definitely on the second and subsequent visits. There is so much to choose from with guest appearances from Ursula Rucker, Vikter Duplaix, Rob Gallagher as well as some Vibraphone playing and other instrumentation. It's a friends birthday next week and I definitely know what to buy him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware ordering the vinyl edition direct from Amazon!, 5 Sept. 2011

I ordered the vinyl edition of In Between in 2011 from Amazon directly as I was amazed they still had new copies available. The first copy I received was horrendously warped, and after sending that back for a replacement another was dispatched and was warped in the same places! Amazon customer service said they were looking into the issue, but short of putting it on a turntable I'm not sure how they could have. Anyway, it is back up and I can't imagaine they have resolved the problem so if you are thinking of ordering this be prepared to receive a near unplayable copy (the warp was so bad that the needle jumped off the vinyl!).

Note to Amazon - you need to store vinyl vertically not horizontally. It's not like it's a new format or anything...

Incidentally this album is amazing, so if you're reading this review because it has been attached to the CD version then please disregard the 1 star rating and view it as a 5 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really strange record..., 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: In Between (Audio CD)
There are excelent themes here...and some others...that I think that are under par...
Not your average dance/electronica record. It reveals absolutely no intention to be subject to any branding...So in view of this, you'll probably love some themes and pass others instantly...and probably not the same I do.

3.0 out of 5 stars whats the big deal?, 18 July 2002

This review is from: In Between [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Okay, so the big german collective have finally released an lp after so many years of anticipation. We've all been waiting for some cross over nujazz album that will change the history of music, but sadly, the j-nov's have failed. The album itself isnt bad, but the thing is that it's not that good. There are some nice tracks like "no use" or "another new day", but its not as if it hasnt been done before. Maybe the lp suits people who dont know alot about this music as it will start them off deeper into the new. But for more knowlegable dj's/listeners, this lp wont be much use to them as many of the tracks are b grade, heard it all before's . I believe that there is alot of other better music coming out right now such as the Cinematic Orchestra, Da Lata, Koop, 4 Hero, and even Jazzy Jeff. Buy the album if you want a kickstart in leftfield music, but otherwise, buy the amazing music made with real instruments. Remember: "dont believe the hype"
