In recent years, there's been a tendency to criticise the playing ofSegovia, with even luminaries such as John Williams making disparagingcomments. To some extent there *is* room for criticism, not least inSegovia's unashamedly romantic approach to music of the baroque era. Butin the history of the classical guitar, Segovia is a huge, unavoidable, monumental landmark. And these CDs help to display the full range of thegreat man's work. Here'll you'll find music ranging from the earlistmusic written for plucked strings, all the way to the modern composers. You get concertos, pieces by Sor et al, transcriptions of Bach, and muchmuch more.
If you're an afficionado of the classical guitar but don't have anyrecordings by Segovia in your collection, then there's a huge gaping hole- and this inexpensive box set will fill it wonderfully well. Andwhatever one thinks of the academic critique of the great man's playingstyle, the fact is that these recordings are darn pleasant to listento!
Highly recommended.

Especially when listening to the Spanish miniatures, it's difficult to imagine greater musicianship. Under Segovia's fingers the guitar emerges as an instrument capable of a wider range of colours, effects and sonorities than perhaps any other. Yes the Bach pieces seem somewhat dated now, but these are transcriptions of pieces never intended for the instrument. I've listened to them only once, but have returned again and again to the discs that are made up of the music of Segovia's compatriots, much of it unfamiliar to me and so refreshingly different from the central European tradition. A treasurable collection, cheeringly packaged.
