5.0 out of 5 stars the ghost of carcass, 24 April 2007
This review is from: Black Earth (Audio CD)
yep as i say above the ghost of carcass hangs heavy over this release..not really all that surprising though is it!!!
the only thing being different is that this album feel s alot heavier and alot faster than the latter day carcass and with liiva on vocals it feels much more like a death metal album.
the riffs are thrashy, the solos are straight out of the 80's with the amott boys giving them their own distinctive twist and the drums thunder away in the background pounding into your head.
but what separates arch enemy out away from the rest of the pack is the songwriting and the structure of the songs....they have got sooo much going on in them it seems unbelievable...so many guitar lines!!!
so many riffs!!!
what a debut is all i can say!!!!!
if you like the later stuff and are just beginning to venture back definately but this its absolutely brilliant!

Arch Enemy's debut album pretty much follows straight on from the path of Carcass' `Heartwork': perhaps a little rougher round the edges but still good solid death metal with a good line in catchy riffs. At this early stage of their career Arch Enemy are still yet to be afflicted by too much heavy metal muso posturing, which makes this one of their heaviest outings. The band would perfect their sound with later releases, but this is still a fine death metal debut, and considering the course Carcass would take with `Swansong' Michael Amott's departure to Arch Enemy now seems like a very shrewd move. Good stuff...
