SS2 is a game that has scary amounts of detail. Unfortunately this works against the game in the way that the troops are tiny and it can be very difficult to pick a machinegunner from a rifleman... which sadly causes disaster. 5.0 out of 5 stars A much improved version of the original SS, 17 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
For fans of the original SS this sequel offers a few new aspects that take a little time to get used to. Not only do you have to masters the new battle chants of the Japanese, but there's the massively flexible aspect of removing vehicle crews, using aircraft on airfields for bombing runs, scouting, strafing and paradropping, and the new rules for infantry. The game installs more realistic aspects of warfare than the previous game; infantry are usually shot dead by one rifle round, unless they're crawling, which you now command (no more having to crawl around because of sniper fire). Similarly the tanks armour works more realistically, with regards to thickness and shell size. In SS1 a 37mm gun could weedle away at a Koenigstiger until it was destroyed. Now you're just making pretty fireworks, but on the reverse, one hit from something powerful enough can totally destroy the target, an 88mm against a sherman tank for instance. Crews give you the joy of being able to capture idle enemy tanks, or those which have had their crews killed, leading a whole new aspect to SS, trying to leave something intact occasionally. Unfortunately there are a few downers in the game, the new feature of moral. Unless the mission allows you to use propoganda vehicles this aspect is pretty pointless, but doesn't detract from play to much. Once again there are a long list of indept campaigns to play, ranging from Operation Market Garden to the hard resistance of the Japanese in the Pacific. SS2 also sees a more defined charcter to each nation. Previously the standard truck for A, B and C was the same. Now the Allies trucks are quite obviously more powerful than the Germans, giving all the more incentive to lauch a little ambush, shoot the drivers and steal those 8x8's.... Overall an excellent game which, were it not large enough, has a indepth mission editor to create missions with whatever troops you like until your hearts desire. A most definate buy for SS fans and newer strategists alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, 21 Oct. 2004
This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
Ok, this isn't for everyone... but if u liked playing with toy soldiers once; if you ever fancied yourself as a strategist; if WW2 is of some interest - then you will be hard pushed to find a more immersive and complex and intellectually demanding game. I have played this game for several years now, and i am constantly learning new things about it. New tactics, new ways of controlling units, new aspects of the gameplay. The single player mode is a bit limited - the computer is programmed to respond in one way only - but still fun for a while. However, when u move on to multiplayer online u will be blown away. Up to 12 ppl can play simultaneously, and no 2 games will ever be the same. As far as i am concerned this game is up there with Chess as the best game ever. Just be careful that u don't lose your job/ girlfriend/ life - if you're competitive, it's addictive.

This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
The whole world is nothing but one big battlefield. You are on the front line - in the very centre of realistic, frantic battle action, which amazes and delights even the shrewdest of strategy experts. As the commander of German, Russian, British, American and finally Japanese troops, you'll have to fight on water, land and in the air, to meet all your objectives.
The four different difficulty levels available ass variety to the gameplayand the fast pasced multiplayer mode is thrilling beyond imagination.
The user-friendly editor allows for unlimited supplies of professionally generated maps and missions....making sure the action never ends.
With Sudden Strike II the war is far from over!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game but buggy., 4 Mar. 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
I would give this game a low 4 stars, as it is a good game, but i did have a few problems with it. Such as it crashing when i finished the last level on the different campaigns and i also think the mutiplayer could be improved. If you like games which require you to think and you like WW2 then this game is for you!! it was also good that there were may difficulties you could set the game at, as SS1 was too hard but this was just right. As for the graphics , i think they are pretty good, especially the planes and the scenary, the sound of battle is good to. So a good improvement on SS2, but still not perfect...

This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
I purchased this product whilst under the impression that it would be like every other startegy game, unfortunatly it isn't. At first i was hoping that there would be a skirmish option to play. Unfortunatly there isn't. Although there is a campagin and single mission options, both usually generate a pre-made mission with particular options and force sizes already made up. There is a map-editor function though so if your not im-patient you can do what you want. Whilst playing there are also loads of other cool options you can do with your resources some may find them tedious and may prefer if it was automatically done. Watch out for the fact that the mouse buttons are the other way round, e.g. if you want your units to do an action your must use the right mouse button. If your very familiar with other startegy games this will probably catch you off guard and take a while for you to get use to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Realistic..., 27 Dec. 2002

SS2 is a game that has scary amounts of detail. Unfortunately this works against the game in the way that the troops are tiny and it can be very difficult to pick a machinegunner from a rifleman... which sadly causes disaster. Another problem is the sheer speed at which your troops die - 1 shot from the enemy sometimes. By the time you have located the source from the depressingly dark fog of war your men are mostly dead.
There are a phew campaigns but mostly they are the same...
THIS IS NOT A GAME LIKE C&C - IF YOU DON'T MOVE EXTREMELY CAREFULLY AND TACTICALLY YOU WILL LOSE.
The graphics are pretty good for this type of game and the sound effects are excellent.
Might be some ppls cup of tea but not mine. Too gloomy.

5.0 out of 5 stars What People Want!, 7 Aug. 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sudden Strike II (PC) (Video Game)
What can I say... It's Sudden Strike! If that's not enough reason to buy it, then you should really go and play the first one through again!
Once you've done that, buy Sudden Strike 2 and experience a new level of detail! If you thought the first one was detailed, you ain't seen nothing yet baby! The new nation is well implemented, and this time you've got proper control over aircraft!
Overall, a quality sequel. It's more of the same, that's for sure; but then again, that's what people want!
