This review is from: Swan Flight (Audio CD)
Anu Tali's debut recording dates from 2000, when she worked with the orchestra she co-founded with her twin sister, Kadri. The two pieces by the Estonian composer, Veljo Tormis, are suites drawn from stage works, and stand beside two masterpieces for orchestra by Debussy and Sibelius. Tormis is not diminished by comparison with the other pieces and his music is full-blooded and romantic, and appropriately atmospheric in "Ocean".

"La Mer" receives one the best recordings ever of this popular piece and the recording engineer, Mati Brauer, deserves high praise for capturing and conveying a sense of a large orchestra in a real space (Estonia Concert Hall, Talinn)with fidelity and impact.

All these performances possess character and individuality under Anu Tali, and while the Debussy in particular faces strong competition from many other recordings - everyone will have their own favourites, mine is a splendidly noisy 1959 French performance by the Lamoureux Orchestra under Igor Markevitch - Tali's reading carries weight, sensitivity and drama.

For those who like to see their musicians as well as hearing them, you'll find a clip on Youtube of the Tali twins planting a small conifer in their garden. Just for the curious...
