4.0 out of 5 stars SCHEIN / SCHEIDT, 19 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Schein - Banchetto Musicale/Scheidt - Ludi Musici (Audio CD)
Virgin VBD5620282 contains two discs of German consort music from the period dominated by Heinrich Schutz. Unfortunately however Schutz left no instrumental music, so that field tends to be represented by his friends Schein and Scheidt, with North German composers Schop, Grabbe, following British expats Brade and Simpson.

The recordings here date from the 1970s and were originally issued on the EMI Reflexe label. CD1 contains selections from Schein's Banchetto musicale, Leipzig 1617, while CD2 contains selections from Scheidt's Ludi Musici, 1621.

Inevitably there are some overlaps between the 16 tracks on Savall's 1978 EMI recording and the 17 tracks on the 1995 Fontalis recording (now reissued as part of the Astree Savall Edition) which has a more lively ambience and the benefit of digital recording. Savall hasn't re-recorded the content of CD1, but there is a good 1995 recording by Pietro Busca on Stradivarius. Having said that this 2CD set is good value as an introduction to German consort music.

Other recordings by Hesperion XX and Jordi Savall of this kind of music are of the earlier Brade: Hamburger Ratsmusik um 1600 (reissued on DHM's budget Baroque Esprit label) and the later Rosenmuller (Astree).
