5.0 out of 5 stars a man for the times, 2 Mar 2003
This review is from: Standard Time (Audio CD)
In these strange times, how nice it is to hear these wonderful standards sung with style and utter, complete charm. With his gravel and scotch voice, Steve Tyrell brings us great music with what seems like such ease...he makes it feel so comfortable.
No small part of what makes this CD a total winner are the marvelous arrangements by Bob Mann (who also plays guitar on all the tracks), and the superb muscians. Jane Monheit is also a lovely touch in the duet "Baby, it's Cold Outside". It's as if Tyrell and the musicians are a unit, a cohesive, oh so pleasing whole.
Clark Terry on trumpet (and vocals on "What a Little Moonlight can Do"), Joe Sample on piano, Plas Johnson on sax, Alan Pasqua also on piano, and so many more, are all fabulous.
This is a delicious CD that gets better with each hearing...the first time I heard it, I merely liked it, by the third, I was 100% sold. It's got a cheerful spirit and a warm heart, and musical excellence throughout...and Steve Tyrell is a star...a bright and polished one that's been a long time coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Class songs from a class artist !, 21 May 2002

This review is from: Standard Time (Audio CD)
This is an ideal follow up to his first album with Steve breathing new life into old standards. He's accompanied by some great musicians who relly know how to play this kind of music.
So just sit back and relax to great songs likeĻIT HAD TO BE YOU and OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY which sound just as fresh as when they were first heard. All in all a great album for all music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ice Girl and The Blues Man, 30 Dec 2004

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Standard Time (Audio CD)
The moment you hear track 5 the duet with Jane Monheit you will be sure that you have just heard the best cover of this song ever. It seems a popular song for artists to have covered this year (2004) but this is the best. The contrast of Monheit's ice cool, clear voice, perfectly pitched and the late night bluesy gravel from Tyrell is out of this world. They sound like they are having fun too! That track alone will sell you the album, but you have 15 more covers that are well arranged and sung. Once again there isn't a lemon among them. If you like blues/jazz/swing then this album just has to be in your collection, but beware Tyrell is very addictive and it wont be long before you buy another of his album's! My copy stayed in the car CD player for over a month! Its great music to drive to, and to share over a late night coffee! Some friends who came to dinner when this album was playing in the background all wanted the volume up and have all gone and bought it. Don't hesitate, buy this album!

Steve Tyrell has a unique, rather gravelly voice. A great interpretation of the lyrics which really makes you listen to the words of the songs. Refreshing to hear his rendition of old standards. Lots of rhythmn and swinging big band sound.
