5.0 out of 5 stars Hallelujah!, 5 Nov. 2001

This review is from: Hallelujah [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Madrid's Siesta Records have been releasing some of the finest pop records for the last 8 or 9 years. Their impressive roster includes El Joven Bryan, Vigil, Edwin Moses, Ramon Leal and some exquisite reissues from the likes of The Free Design and Fantastic Something. The brightest star in Siesta's warm, moonlit sky however, has always been La Buena Vida. The group from San Sebastian have been fine tuning their blend of sophisticated, effortless pop since 1992, with influences from Burt Bacharach and Love to Nick Drake and Brian Wilson. They simply ooze charm.
Their latest album "Hallelujah!" is, as always, framed by Irantzu Valencia's impossibly seductive voice. The overall feel is one of style and class, but with no hint of arrogance. The beauty of their music is right up there with the visual elegance of Dan Flavin's "Tatlin V" series or Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion.
While the up-tempo numbers might be lacking from this release, it's nevertheless a logical progression from their last album "Panorama" (1999). Equal measures of melody and strings (this time provided by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra) are able to whisk you away to somewhere you'd rather be than here and now. "Hallelujah!" isn't as poppy as their third album, "Soidemersol" (1997), which was orchestrated by Louis Philippe, but it will leave you just as breathless and needing to play it over and over again.
"Mi voluntad" is a gentle trip through the clouds and away to somewhere too high to come down from. A soundtrack to a better life. "Qué nos va a pasar" - (the single taken from this album) is a genuine, multi-textured pop song - instantly catchy and memorable, whilst at the same time, far too complex to be taken lightly.
Like all Siesta releases, the impeccable design and artwork only add to the fact that this really is a record to treasure. Hallelujah! Indeed.
