5.0 out of 5 stars The best greatest hits I've seen in a long time, 12 Nov 2001

This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
If you've ever liked Mariah Carey this is the album to own. Not only does it have the greatest hits (obviously) but is a comprehensive review of her career. All her best songs right from her very first album can be found, the well know duets with Whitney Houston and Luther Van Dross and also one or two surprises. Personally I think this album portrays Mariah's musical development wonderfully and surpasses her No.1's album by a long way.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential purchase!!, 7 Mar 2002

Of course as an obsessive Mariah fan I was bound to love it... but I'd urge anyone who ever liked MC to buy this. It easily surpasses #1s cos some of her best singles like the soulful, heart-breaking Can't Let Go or the gospelly Anytime You Need A Friend didn't qualify for that compilation. Another bonus is the inclusion of her duet with Luther Vandross on the cover of Endless Love. This isn't avaliable on any other MC release. Despite all the hype about a change of style its clear listening to the compilation that she's always produced an alternating mixture of pop-RnB and emotional ballads. Of course some singles are better than others... I could live without the Westlife duet and prefer her solo version on Rainbow where the emotion of the song comes through and to be honest the bonus remix of All I Want For Christmas is You is one of her weaker remixes but you can't really complain about the inclusion of so many hit singles. Personal faves range from the gospelly debut Vision of Love to the emotional covers of I'll Be There and Without You, the inspirational melodic Hero and Butterfly, tragically sad One Sweet Day, Dreamlover... surely the perfect pop-song? and the catchy, poppish Honey, Heartbreaker and Always Be My Baby. Also nice to hear the soulful, forgotten gem Underneath the Stars and her shamefully overlooked US release Can't Take That Away. I'd recommend this as the perfect introduction to anyone curious about ther music...just don't think this is all there is..go from this to her original albums and find a varied career ranging from pop, soul, rap, jazz, gospel to disco. Enjoy!
