2.0 out of 5 stars Poor. Very poor., 4 Jan 2002
This review is from: Spec Ops II - Xplosiv Range (Video Game)
Spec Ops 2 looks like a bargain on the surface now it's part of the Xplosiv range and especially if you look at some of glowing reviews it had on it's initial release. However don't waste your time or money on this bilge.
The set up of the game is along the lines of Rogue Spear or Delta Force - a squad based shooter where you control America's hardest squaddies. So far so good but released at the same time as Rogue Spear and Hidden and Dangerous the graphics and gameplay of Spec Ops 2 are simply not good enough.
Graphically the game is passable but that's it. There is little detail in the environments and the characters of your men look stiff and unnatural. The gameplay is obviously trying to lean towards the "realistic" but instead is just frustrating and awkward. The only good thing about the game is the sound which is definately above average.
With the assorted Rainbow Six, Delta Force and Hidden and Dangerous titles available in budget ranges and Flashpoint and Ghost Recon upping the ante and Hidden and Dangerous 2 coming up there is simply no excuse for paying your money for this drivel. Avoid like the plague.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 24 Feb 2002
This review is from: Spec Ops II - Xplosiv Range (Video Game)
On a powerful graphics card, with a high power pc, this actually looks ok (you also get to see where they got the inspiration for the flawed character animation in Flashpoint). Then you play the game and realise that this doesn't make up for the fact that it's awful. It's awe inspiringly linear, and very, very boring.
Buy Delta Force 2 if you want a fairly cheap good game, avoid this even if they are giving it away free.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Combat Simulation, 18 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Spec Ops II - Xplosiv Range (Video Game)
This game was not well designed. The first thing which can impress a person is a games menu, and in Spec Ops 2 this is bad. Remembering that this was supposed to compete with games like Delta Force 2 and Rogue Spear, it simply fell at the first hurdle.
After selecting your mission and being given a un-helpful breifing you start the game. The gameplay has been improved from the first Spec Ops with the offering of stances- standing, prone and kneeling. An annoying part of the game is when you find your gun dipping as you run which is frustrating and adds to the games poor gameplay. One good aspect of the game is the arsenal with an adding of 19 weapons which is impressive. The AI on the game has been improved but they are very hard to spot without a sniper rifle and are not as intelligant as you would have hoped.
You will notice that your team-mates have very good eye-sight, spotting the enemey long before you do. The graphics, once set on a high resolution is good, but the level designs lack the imagination which is needed on a combat simulation. There is no "Terrorist rush" or "Camp- wide alert" like in Delta Force 2 and Rogue Spear. Spec Ops 2 multiplayer is very mediocre. You cannot join or host a game from the main menu and so you must join a lobby, but when joined you will defintley enjoy the game more.
In conclusion, Spec Ops 2 is better than the first. Improvements made will be met by joy but its simply a poor combat simulation and does not compare to the wide-range of relating games on the market to date.
