i bought this cd some months ago in the hope of bagging a bargain . i was to be slightly disappointed alas. the programme is enough to have any fans of Russian piano music salivating at the prospect of such at times fiery multifacted music. although Ingrid Jacoby is excellently recorded and booklet notes from Misha Donat are good the actual pianism is very good indeed with poise , insight + immaculate articulation. my main reservation remains the slight lack of requisite fireworks, panache + "devil may care" excitement required to realistically project such demanding works here by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky or in particular Prokofiev's piano sonata no.7.

the most romantic most melodic work by Tchaikovsky, is played the best by Jacoby with finesse but still comes across as over polite. the larger scale Mussorgsky "pictures an an exhibtion" is more rewarding with real moments of insight into this wide ranging work. However for the more forceful Prokofiev - Jacoby simply lacks the sheer bravado + heft of Pollini on DG or Glemser on naxos, to convince in the notoriously demanding moto perpetuo final movement. Jacoby has fine dynamic shading + finesse aplenty but i still prefer Glemser's Prokofiev (on naxos) for its diabolic quality or the grand sweep of Pollini's 70s classic recording of 20th C piano works.

a very good recital overall with plenty to delight, just a little more abandon would have been welcome. go for Pollini, Glemser or Argerich for a little more excitement though. 3 stars going on 4 .
