This review is from: Candy Doll (Audio CD)
First off it needs pointing out that half of the track details shown here on Amazon have missed off the name of the artist and that there is no one called Candy Doll. This was the first of a Dolls series
What we have here is a selection of pure High School pop-usually known as Hot Boppin' Girls-and rockabilly by mainly unknown girls and its pretty sensational stuff put together by the German company Bear Family.
Quite who its aimed at is more difficult to answer but if you like American girl singers from the early days this is highly recommended.
A few of the names could be even found on the top 40 in the 50s such as Bonnie Guitar but in the main these are from No Hit Wonders whose only markets were regional and their own families.
Orella Myers, one of the names here,is typical-a Canadian thrush managed by the same Don Grasher who also handled Myrna Lorrie and later Carroll Baker.A wonderfully shrill voice which floats like a cloud and 2 singles seems to be her total output
And odd song out here is Goodbye Jimmy Goodbye-which can be traced back to the Carter Family-as its a straight ahead slow waltz and a total contrast to the solid rocking sounds of the other 29 songs.Even today few names are recognised
