5.0 out of 5 stars (nearly) forgotten classics, 28 Sep 2009
This review is from: Wipers Box Set: Is This Real? / Youth of America / Over the Edge (Audio CD)
Rooting through my old vinyl today I came across my Wipers albums....played all 3 of these plus the 'Best of' and live albums on the spin (pun intended). Complete classics, especially the 3 in the box set here. Almost spare, sawn guitar sound from this 3 piece with some excellent, intelligent riffs and tunes...reminds me of some of the Wire stuff Highlights for me include the 10 minute long Youth of America, Let's Go Let's Go Away, Potential Suicide, and D7, but there are many more treasures in here. Being 25 years or so since I really played this sort of stuff there is an obvious danger in the music being dated or even just plain embarassing, but I have to say, these albums are real jewels from the past, and stand easily up to todays crowd. For those who haven't heard of the Wipers before, give it a go. Not sure what the CD transfer is like, but if you like vinyl, I can tell you it sounds superb in that format and there are some new reissues just out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential American post-punk, 11 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wipers Box Set: Is This Real? / Youth of America / Over the Edge (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic reissue of three of the best "alternative" albums of the 80's. Post-punk music full of intensity, dark lyrics and -above all- fantastic guitar playing. People are referencing them in terms of their influence on Nirvana and I guess you can track a line from punk to grunge via The Wipers but they're important on their own right. This particular reissue features a multitude of unreleased bonus tracks which, compined with the very logical price, should convince even those who, like me, own the original vinyl albums. "Over the Edge" is my favourite of the 3, but they are all great and so is the rest of this band's output and solo Greg Sage album. Let's hope they'll also be reissued in the future...

This review is from: Wipers Box Set: Is This Real? / Youth of America / Over the Edge (Audio CD)
The Wipers are amazing. I first heard of them through nirvana. There sound is very similar to thr whole grunge scene. Niravan had done a number of covers including the amazong "D-7" which is my favorite song ever.
Even though the wipers first began in 1979. They werent seen as cool at the time, the start of punk was used to fairly short songs. while the "youth of america" is ten miniutes long. However, it wasnt until later ablums started to sell that people began to notice the greatness of the wipers earlier ablums.
The first ablum "is this real?" is in my opinion the best ablum ive heard in a while. Classic songs such as "Potential Suicide" and "Mystery" stand out, but no song on this ablum is weak they all have there own greatness about them.
The second ablum "Youth of Amercia" is also a classic in its own way. In my opinion not as strong as "Is this real?" but still good for any essentail cd collection.
The third ablum "over the edge" is again not as good as "Is this real?" but ahs some classics such as "Romeo" and "No One wants an alien". Better than "Yoth of America"
The plus side of this coolection is the fact that you also get bonus tracks and on the "IS this Real?" ablum you also have the alien boy ep included too. These ablums are brillant in their own little way!!!!
