Makes great tarte tatin but I wish it wasn't so heavy - the turn-over moment is hairy!

5.0 out of 5 stars CAST IRON CERT, 4 July 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
TATIN dish in CAST IRON from Le Creuset.

COLOUR : CERISE

However, this dish is also ideal for:
.....quiche
.... a tart
......a chunky omelette
....simply baked fruit or roasted vegetables.
A cookery colleague turns out a perfect upside down pineapple cake, on a regular basis.

Approximate size, based on my own dish:

* External base diameter : 20 cm, gently tapering out to 24.5 cm at the top
* Overall width including the low-set handles : 30 cm
* Depth : 4.5 cm

Suitable for all heat sources.
Easy to clean/dishwasher safe.
Sturdily boxed.
Colour - CERISE
Le Creuset embossed on one handle.

The accompanying booklet also contains some interesting history about the alleged origins of the 'Tarte Tatin' recipe:

...'Dating back to the late 19th Century, this recipe was allegedly invented as the result of a 'mistake' by Ms Stephanie Tatin - a mistake which was to become a piece of culinary history and has continued to enjoy growing popularity ever since......'

The whole story appears in this chunky booklet, in 6 languages (Svenska, Espanol, Nederlands, Deutsch, English and Français), which also includes use/care instructions, along with recipes for:

* Apple Tarte Tatin
* Banana Butterscotch Tatin
* Chocolate Pear Dessert with Chocolate Ganache Sauce
* Mediterranean Vegetable Tatin
* Salmon and Leek Quiche

to get you started.

Doubles up as a stunning fruit bowl, when not in use for cooking on or off the cooker!

RRP averages £75, if you can find one - or try Le Creuset UK direct (£84 at the time of writing).

The neat 25 cm dish is also available in BLUE and traditional, VOLCANIC

It also comes in a smaller size:

14 cm, which is handy for an individual portion and also comes in VOLCANIC & BLUE

BUT, sadly, these sized dishes are also getting very hard to find, these days, in my experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for Tarte Tatin, in my opinion....., 23 Jan. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Le Creuset Cast Iron Tatin Dish, 25 cm - Volcanic (Kitchen & Home)
...and not just for the old favourite apple version!

MATERIAL : CAST IRON
COLOUR : VOLCANIC

This Tarte Tatin Dish is certainly excellent at its 'traditional' job, but it is also equally successful as a base for cooking a whole range of tempting sweets, puddings and savoury dishes in.

I have just successfully tried out a super new recipe for:

'Chocolate and Raspberry Cake'

a seriously rich cake with a hidden tang, which can be served warm as a dessert with hot raspberry sauce or cold as a cake.

However, this dish is also ideal for
.....quiche
....a tart
......a chunky Spanish tortilla/omelette
.....roasted vegetables.....the list is endless!

Approximate size, based on my own dishes:

* External base diameter : 20 cm, gently tapering out to 24.5 cm at the top
* Overall width including the low-set handles : 30 cm
* Depth : 4.5 cm

And because the handles are set lower than the dish, it is easy to place the serving plate on top and flip the contents over, without loss, when required!

Suitable for all heat sources.
Easy to clean/dishwasher safe.
Sturdily boxed.

The whole story appears in this chunky booklet, in 6 languages (Svenska, Espanol, Nederlands, Deutsch, English and Français), which also includes use/care instructions, along with delicious recipes for:

* Apple Tarte Tatin
* Banana Butterscotch Tatin
* Chocolate Pear Dessert with Chocolate Ganache Sauce
* Mediterranean Vegetable Tatin
* Salmon and Leek Quiche

Doubles up as a stunning fruit bowl, when not in use for cooking on or off the cooker!

This great dish is also currently available in:

BLUE & CERISE

It also comes in a smaller size:

14 cm, which is handy for an individual portion.

The 14 cm size is also available in:

CERISE
BLUE

...but these sized dishes are getting harder to find, these days!

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic dish with many uses, 9 May 2007
This review is from: Le Creuset Cast Iron Tatin Dish, 25 cm - Volcanic (Kitchen & Home)
This is a great dish which is not only perfectly designed for tarte tatin but also works very well for making tortilla (spanish omelette).

use on the hob to caramelise your fruit for the tatin or cook your tortilla, then pop it in the oven/under the grill to finish off each dish. The two hanldes make turning out your finished dish easy as pie and fit in the oven much easier than if it had one long handle.

thoroughly recommended as an investment for the kitchen that will last a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful quality dish makes a great tatin, 18 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Le Creuset Cast Iron Tatin Dish, 25 cm - Volcanic (Kitchen & Home)
I have used this tatin dish a few times now to make Gluten Free Apple Tarte Tatin.

This is using the recipe from Grace Cheetam's book also purchased on Amazon The Best Gluten-Free, Wheat-Free & Dairy-Free Recipes: More Than 100 Mouth-watering Recipes for All the Family.

The dish sits perfectly flat on our ceramic stove and is easy to manouvre and flip when the time comes.

I thank previous reviewers for their comments & photos, and will attach a couple of mine also.
