I bought my first SONY ECM-DS70P in Perth Australia in 2002 and have used it extensively since. It has been used for recording gamelan music in Indonesia (poking out the top of a rucksack) and choir concerts in Iceland, orchestral concerts in the UK, organ playing in cathedrals and I can't remember what else! All with very satisfactory results.
Sadly, at last I have managed to trash the T-joint, which seems to have led to a loosening of the wires inside and now I get a bit of intermittent white noise, so it's time for this little mic to go but I say, at this price, ten years and in Arctic, temperate and tropic climes, this microphone has done superbly and I will be buying another. No question!

I saw some suspiciously cheap ones on ebay but they are fakes from Hong Kong - caveat emptor! You can even see the airbrushing out of the Sony name on some pictures, if you zoom in ...

Buy yourself an extension lead to go with the microphone. Belkin Pro Series Mini Stereo Extension Cord 3.5mm M/F 3.6m I am also considering a right angle jack plug adaptor, to conserve the one on the mic itself. RIGHT ANGLE 3.5MM ST PLUG TO SOCKET ADAPTOR

For reference, I record using an iriver H340 and the two have been completely compatible (it also worked exceptionally well with a sony Minidisc recorder).

As any buyer should I read the users reviews of this item before making a purchase. There were quite a few negative reviews, but on reading them it appeared that these were based on the failings of those reviewers other equipment rather than the microphone. Like the one who said it picked up the noise of his mechanical minidisc when used with it. Surely that would indicate that it was a sensative microphone and warrant praise rather than complaint. Then another reviewer who said the microphone input on his Kodak device had very low amplification input. Again not the fault of the microphone but of the host device. The last reviewer also recommended that rather than this microphone people should get a good DYNAMIC microphone. That is the last thing you want if you have a low input amplification on your portable device, as a DYNAMIC microphone requires an external amplifier to work. DYNAMIC microphones are like the ones singers use on stage. What you need for a portable device is a condenser microphone, which is just what this Sony microphone is.

Anyway I decided to make my decision based on the reviews that highlighted the merits of the microphone itself and I am glad I did as it performs very well. I use it with a Tascam portable flash recorder and also with a Panasonic camcorder and it has produced very clear results, especially when the sound being recorded is further away than the built in microphones on my devices can cope with.

The microphone is rather expensive, but it seems most of the similar microphones are around the same price. I looked at the similar sized microphone from Olympus as well, but decided to go with the Sony as I have always been pleased with every Sony item I have ever bought, and I still consider this to be so.

I got this to go with my Gopro digital video camera, The audio from the gopro is not very good so getting a stereo mic was needed. the audio is much better but i need to edit in final cut by increasing the Loudness as because it has no power source itself the volume is quite low (very low) so if you are blogging with it feel free to talk louder into it. I do a lot of blogging with it and from here on in i am always using the microphone, but always having to edit. youtube.com/dombower

Bough this microphone to use with GoPro Hero 2 camera. First impression - flimsy piece of plastic. The sound quality is really good, but for such price I thought that this little piece of equipment would be more solid. The moving part looks like going to break with every touch. Although sound quality is good, but wouldn't recommend for the purpose of using with action cameras.

Bought this for use with my Kodak Zi8 that my wife bought me for Christmas. Happy with it :) Good quality stereo sound with reduced wind noise. Have ordered a 90 degree adapter as well so that I can plug it directly into the Zi8 without a cable. This is definitely better than the internal Mic.

As a non-techie I have found using this mic to record to minidisc very easy. I was surprised at its sensitivity. I have only used it for recording live music at home and for this it seems adequate. How good it is at recording a live gig with a 6 piece band I have no idea? Perhaps others may be able to give more info about this.
NB Just to update this review. I have now used this microphone very successfully with a md recorder to record a live mix of a 6 piece band plus vocals. It was a little trial and error though because I had to work out the approprate levels for the machine and also set the sensitivity levels of the mic. Once I had got this sorted the mic performed very well indeed and helped to produce excellent cd quality recordings. So I am delighted with it.

I purchased this microphone to use with a Sony PCM-M10 recorder. Due to the handling noise if holding the recorder. I needed an external microphone to allow me to handle the recorder whilst recording and not get handling noise when recording from the recorders in built microphones. This microphone allows me to do this. Quality is not quite as good as the in built microphones but very good and more than acceptable. Recommended.

VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality achieved during a recording of a live session with about 15 musicians participating. Good and clear at bass and treble. no fuzziness at all. I have no hesitation in recommending this compact, easy to use little microphone!!!
