4.0 out of 5 stars Educationally very useful - and cheap!
For teachers, the OS Interactive Atlas 5.0 is not only useful for teaching the basics of scale, compass directions, grid references and so on, but it is a great way for them to familiarise themselves with the geography of the UK at a variety of scales (although you will need to design your own resources!).
The second main advantage of the CD-ROM is its cost, complete...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, but not much practical use
If you expected this to be a substitute for your Landranger or Explorer maps, think again.
It's okay for motorists I suppose, and quite easy to use and navigate around, but for walkers it is useless. The 100 extracts at 1:25000 cover such miniscule areas, that you wonder why they bothered.

For instance, what if you wanted to use the maps to do a walk in the Yorkshire Dales; the Three Peaks say? Er, no. 'Fraid not.
It would have been nice to be able to print out the relevant bits of an Explorer map and take them instead of folding the real thing into some new contortion, but this CDRom simply isn't suitable.
Not really sure who would benefit from it. Even motorists won't unless they have a PC in their car...

2.0 out of 5 stars OS Interactive Atlas fails to impress, 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition (CD-ROM)
If you think that by buying this software you will never have to buy another OS map - forget it. The claim that the "100 specially selected 1:25000 map extracts" are "ideal for walkers and cyclists" is clearly absurd when you realise that each one covers an area of around 6km.x 6km. Any cyclist would get from one side of the map to the other in under half an hour.
In a popular area like Snowdonia, the "extracts" cover less than 10% of the area covered by the Landranger 115 map.
The town plans are good as far as they go - but they don't go far enough. London, for example stops at Camden Town in the north and Clapham in the south.
The 1:250,000 map of Gt. Britain is an excellent motorists map, but you still get the feeling that it has been done better by other people.

1.0 out of 5 stars beware the * on the front cover, 28 Aug 2003

This review is from: Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition (CD-ROM)
This is the most pointless product I've ever wasted money on. The front cover states that it is 'ideal for walkers & cyclists' yet it does not detail public footpaths or bridle paths. The bitmaps are unuseable and the interface is clunky and non-standard for a windows product.
Spend the extra 20 & buy a product such as Anquet maps.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition, 6 Nov 2002

The 1:250,000 mappings are useful, with some handy features to allow you to get to customise your view.
However the 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 map segments are too small to be of any use, except so that you can see what a map looks like.
As someone who uses maps a lot this has little to offer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Interactive Atlas, fifth edition, 27 Aug 2003
By A Customer

Not worth the money. Better to have a paper atlas and buy genuine OS maps. CDs need to be inserted each time to use. Interactivity poor and chart detail basic, except for detailed extracts which are too limited.

1.0 out of 5 stars Total Rubbish, 27 Oct 2008

Bought this item with a view to printing out the same map of my local walking area to highlite different routes (gained from walking books with only black and white simple maps) and save them without having to buy multiple maps. If this is your intention then do not buy this product as most map scales are the same as your GB route book. The selected 1:25 000 map extracts are so small in area as to render them pointless which is a very good word for this software, you have been warned!!

Some software I was using needed the images off this Atlas to work, but the maps aren't that great to be honest, would not buy again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not at all as expected, 25 Sep 2013
This review is from: Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition (CD-ROM)
This is a poorly designed bit of software. The user interface is non existant, it is slow, clunky provides little functionality.
The maps themselves are terrible, not genuine Ordnance Survey maps at all. The promised 25000 scale maps are few and irrelevant.
Go for Fugawi instead.

The second main advantage of the CD-ROM is its cost, complete with a site licence.
Drawbacks include the fact that its key isn't easy for many younger secondary level students to understand, and that some students found difficulties in backtracking, once they had made a mistake. Also, the quizzes would probably be better suited to adults or higher ability students.
