4.0 out of 5 stars Great performance - wot no orchestra?!, 26 Jan 2008

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gounod - Messe Chorale; Saint-Saens - Mass, Op 4 (transcr. for two organs) (Audio CD)
These pieces are brilliantly performed. Just don't expect an orchestra to strike up in the Saint-Saens Mass as it's the version for two organs here. This fact becomes obvious if you have time to listen to the samples before purchase, or may be apparent if you have good detective instincts and realise that no orchestra is cited.

The singing is almost always terrific, as is Marie-Claire Alain on the Grand Organ. To be honest the organs themselves aren't ideally suited to Romantic music; the Choir Organ accompaniment in particular is light and bright where it ought ideally to be richer and smoother, however the Grand Organ is thrilling in its own way.
