3.0 out of 5 stars First Impressions - Slight disappointment
Ok, so this is a long review, but could be worth a read if you liked ISS......
First there was 'Kick Off', then 'Sensible Soccer' and then the 'Fifa' series all setting a new standard of computer football, each and every title was a sport that created its own playable genre.
Having played Pro Evolution Soccer's predecessor, 'ISS' for nearly a year when the PS2...

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Be Patient, 24 Dec 2001
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
I only recently bought a PS2, and one of the first games on my list was Pro Evolution Soccer. As a big big fan of the predecessor, ISS PE2 for the PS1, the great reviews this game received made it a must for me.
My first impressions were that the graphics were excellent, the players were actually recognisable by their faces, and the setup was easy enough. When i first played it i was a little disappointed. The buttons are a LITTLE unresponsive, the commentary is a disgrace, (the game is 3-2 with 3 minutes left and the commentator decides that "the crowd are beginning to lose interest in the game").
I like many others was pretty good at the previous iss game, and i played this like i played the others. BUT you will need to change the way you play. The onus has been taken off pace in this game, a sprint will mean that you have less control over the ball, and thats when people are saying the buttons are unresponsive. Only when you have the ball in close control can you play a quick pass or shot.
I did get very frustrated with the game at first, but i played and played at it, and am now beginning to get the hang of it.
I at first thought i would be able to slip easily into this, but konami have modified it just enough to improve it.
SO give it time, it is a great game but will take a little getting used to.

5.0 out of 5 stars gooner4life, 1 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
Quite simply the best football game on the market,Konami rules when it come to football games and no other comes close to realistic dribbling, ball control, player movement and scoring! so what if it doesnt have a full fifa licence, its all about gameplay not the packaging! scoring your first goal is so gratifying cos u know it came from pure skill and persitance rather than a fluke 40 yard screamer fifa style! a must buy for real footy fans!
cons: the comentary is crap, the refs dont see blatant hand balls and when your strugling to score that vital goal that will win u the league in the dying seconds u should be able to dive like Van Nisteroy against Ipswich(however if u turn your back sharpley at the point of impact u normally get a penalty!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!, 1 Dec 2001
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
I was a bit apprehensive when I first played this because ISS Pro Evolution on the PS1 was so good, I was sure I was going to be let down by this game. Not so. It took me a few games to get into this but I am now glad that I perservered. This is the most realistic, dynamic and fun football game around.
I am an ISS Pro Evolution veteran and thus found the controls relatively easy to pick up. Just beating a defender for pace and the crashing the ball into the bottom corner with Shevchenko or Batigol is more satisfying than ever. The graphics are outstanding - playing at the San Siro on a sunny day is literally beautiful. The game itself is as close to real football as you can get. The commentary is disasterous - but who cares?? Just turn the commentary off and listen to the superb chanting noises emanating from the crowd.
I'm just so relieved that Konami have done it again and set the bench mark for all football games. Don't let the pretty pictures of FIFA fool you, this is the best football game on the market!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST FOOTIE GAME OF ALL TIME!!, 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
Even though there were a few annoying features in Konami's previous ISS games ( I mean let's be honest the first ISS game release on PS2 was useless), they have just gone and released the most playable, realistic and awesome football game of all time on any platform.
You can choose international teams, club teams or the two all star teams and players names are real. Playing the game is so fluid you will actually start believing that you are watching a live game on tv. Add to this the AI of the players and this makes for an unforgettable experience. The players have the ability to hold off defenders, use their strength to shrug past them, execute subtle lay-offs and touches, bend the ball ( a feature that was glaringly missing from the predecessors), round the keeper, etc etc..
All in all this is a must for any football fan out there and well worth the money. If you are a FIFA fanatic, swallow your pride and give this a try. I promise you will never look back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Football Action, 27 Mar 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
After playing most in the long line of Fifa games, this is a truly refreshing change. I found the frustration of losing 9-8 on Fifa (international class) simply too much (not to mention unrealistic) and bought Pro-Evolution- and never looked back...
The basic gameplay actually requires a lot of skill, and there is satisfaction-a-plenty from scoring a good goal. Coupled with fantastic graphics and very life-like player motion, Pro-Evolution is a true footballers game.
With respect to Fifa, Pro-Evolution offers three main advantages...
1)No ridiculous scorelines (10-9 etc). Nil-nil results are common and a late 1-0 winning goal is often seen (a la Man Utd...),
2)Goalkeepers are reliable, they won't suddenly throw the ball into the back of the net in the 89th minute of the world cup final- again, much more realistic of modern top-flight football.
3)It plays like a real football match. For example, thirty-yard over head volleys are not seen in this game, and hammering the pass button will not result in super-slick 1-touch play as can happen with Fifa. It aint easy to score a really good goal, but it's well worth it when you do...
On the downside, the music is jarring and the commentary is utterly abysmal- but stick on a cd instead and you'll be laughing. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entering the 21st Century in Style, 2 May 2002
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
This game is truly the best football game ever made. Yeah, FIFA is great for 6 year olds who like knocking 24 past there mates, and twirling 14 times on the way to goal, but this game offers the most realistic features ever! Up until now, i'm sure that many will agree that after a while on most footy games, you find a way to score the same goal over and over again. However in this game, every goal is different from 25 yard drills to 2 yard tap ins to an own goal canon off the defender. Yes, yes, there are faults. The ref never appears, theres no handballs, and the competitions are limited (round robins with friends is great, especially if you put a pound in each!). You can also (occationally) score using the long ball tactic. The only thing that will beat this game is the new release due soon. Truly FANTASTIC!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Football Game Ever!, 18 April 2002
By
Chris Gibbs (Cambridge, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
I've been playing footy games since Kick Off and Sensible Soccer on the Amiga, classics as they may be, Pro Evolution beats them hands down. Not far from a perfect game, here are the imperfections:
- Needs a full FIFPro license, but this is only a very minor flaw.
- Passpack rule doesn't always work correctly.
- You can handball and the ref doesn't notice.
Apart from that, this is THE best football game EVER, just takes a couple of hours to get into. Ignore the FIFA fans who seem to think that graphics are everything, and who want a game where u can get scores of 10-0...

5.0 out of 5 stars Who's the daddy now!?, 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
This is THE football game of all football games. Sure it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of real footy but I strongly reccomend this great football game. I used to play the FIFA range of titles, but the reviews and praise that the ISS(PSOne series)received, I had to try it out. You may well think that it's just a game of football, but believe me, no two games or goals are ever the same. Scoring is not easy either, 'keeper's(and defense's) difficulty increases as the difficulty setting progresses. There are plenty of real stadiums to choose from, but not under their real name. Now I know I will get criticised for this statement, but hear me out: the commentary is not all that bad!Chris James calls the action anbd occassionaly Terry Butcher gives his thoughts. The crowd noise is superb, ranging from drum bands to name chants. This game is almost perfect, so take my advice, and buy it now! It is now out on PSOne as well so no need to worry PSX owners!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant...but silly, silly mistakes, 30 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
Okay. This is the BEST football game ever. The gameplay is outstanding and the graphics a joy to watch. However, the sound is really dire and the options menu's are terribly poor. When you play in Cup Mode for example, if you pick 4 teams, they play in the order you picked them. So the draw is pre determined ??? Really annoyingly bad. I am also not aware of instant reply function available, unless you score a goal of course. I mean, when i hit a cracking shot from 25 yards that bounces of the underside of the bar and out, i think i would like to see it again please Konami. Its little things like that that make this game 4 stars only. All things that could have been easily corrected. But for gameplay and addictiveness, WELL DONE !

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets even better the more you play it, 19 Jan 2002
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer (Video Game)
I noticed a few people giving this game a bad review and all I can say to that is: take some time to get used to the control system. It is only slightly different from the ISSPE series on the PS. Playing this game the first time, I noticed few annoying things like losing the ball easlily and not being able to score even though I was banging in the goals in the PS version.
Now all that is history, I absolutly enjoy this game and it is without a doubt the ONLY football simulation out there. FIFA 2002 I gave a go, but it doesnt even come close. Everyone is saying how FIFA's the game with the graphics and PES is stronger on gameplay, well the players in PES look more identical to their real life counterparts in PES, the player animation and the ball physics in PES imitate real life movements, and very well too, in a far more realistic way than FIFA. And the gameplay...let me not even begin. If FIFA gets 50% for gameplay (which I consider on the high side) PES should get 300%!! The player names are not accurate in some South American teams, well edit the names and its saves on your memory card and you never have to worry about that again. Switch off the player name commentary and you dont have to worry about the wrong names being said. The commentary is not that good but who cares about that. Do you wanna play a football simulation or listen to some programmed voices talking on cue. You'll be having so much fun playing this game, especially in the two player mode, you will not notice the commentary.
Overall it's a fantastic game. Its reason enough to own a PS2 and for me made the choice very easy when it came down to PS2, Xbox or Gamecube. If you own a PS2 and you like football, you simply have to get the game. Even if you're not into video games and you like football, watch 2 people who are good at this game play. Its the best.
