Where to start? I have never seen this, either cinema, TV or Video, but I had read about it in various Corman books and I do like some of his early films (Viking Women/Swamp Women?Gunslinger/5 Guns WEst/Oklahoma Woman/Not of this Earth etc), and I like Fay Spain, and wish she had had a better career. As the price was right I ordered it. It's quite a revelation. The first 15 minutes, inc the strange titles, are really startling and way ahead of it's time. It slows a bit as we go into the gang girls' home lives, The film is almost worth seeing for the appearence of Dorothy Neumann as the "heroine's mother. Talk about weird. The climax is a gang rumble, surprisingly violent with loud "Batman" type sound effects. The acting varies wildly. Fay Spain shows what a good, sexy actress she could be, given the right script and director. The lead, June Kenney, isn't really up to it as Barbara the "innocent" caught up in gang violence (tho how or why she came to be in the "Black Widows" is never really made clear.) Ziva Rodan and Sandy Smith work well as 2 gang members. Corman regulars like Richard Devon and Bruno veSota don't impress much. It's a bit formless and there is lots of running rather aimlessly. Photography by Floyd Crosby is very atmospheric, and Walter Green's music works well. Ok, it's no classic, but it definetly has some good bits and is worth seeking out (in my humble opinion) The print and sound are very good and the price is very reasonable. Do give it a go.
