5.0 out of 5 stars The Amityville Horror - Blu-ray
Amityville Horror [Blu-ray] [1979] [US Import] Potential buyers in the U.K. of this Blu-ray disc should note that the Picture Aspect Ratio is 1.85:1 not 2.35:1 as printed on the cover. It is also Region A and as a consequence, is not compatible with Standard U.K. players. Picture quality is excellent with practically no noise even in dark scenes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overlong, lots of shouting, but has atmosphere
The Amityville Horror is based on a true story, or a fabrication- but once Hollywood got wind of it they knew that the movie would make big bucks. Everyone loves a bit of possession and a ghost story, right? Right! the movie grossed over 100 million worldwide.

James Brolin and Margot Kidder (sexy as hell) portray the Lutz couple who have moved in to a new house...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 3 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the greatest haunted house movies ever, supposedly based on a true story but I don't believe it's true that doesn't make it a bad film though. There have been many films based on the Amityville house and this one is definitely the best and the most faithful to the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars scary, scary, scary., 18 Sep 2003
By A Customer
the other reviews say its hammy and cheap but all i can say is
that it and its sequel is very scary and gave me nightmares for weeks. who cares about the special effects remember it was the 70's but it still has the tension and atmospere of a good old haunted house tale. Stands up to repeated viewing time and time again when your in the mood for a good old scary movie.

Comes with bonus documentaries that include interviews with the Lutz's and others. This is one of my all time favourite scares so I'm thrilled with this edition and the added extra's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amityville Horror, 9 Aug 2001

Fans of this francise will love the orginal, although the special effects maybe dated by todays standards you'll still be in for some shocks along the way... An all time haunted house classic, forget the haunting and the house on haunted hill, this is the house that even in the 80's will make it's 90's counter parts look pail and class less...

3.0 out of 5 stars Overlong, lots of shouting, but has atmosphere, 5 Mar 2014

The Amityville Horror is based on a true story, or a fabrication- but once Hollywood got wind of it they knew that the movie would make big bucks. Everyone loves a bit of possession and a ghost story, right? Right! the movie grossed over 100 million worldwide.

James Brolin and Margot Kidder (sexy as hell) portray the Lutz couple who have moved in to a new house with their family despite knowing that a mass murder took place there just a year previously. That mass murder took place because of other demons in the basement giving the old message to a man to go kill your family. There are eerie goings on, but to tell you the truth there isn't enough horror in the film and virtually no scares. The acting is terrific, and that saves the film. But the movie is about 30 minutes too long and never goes anywhere. By the end you're amazed how easy it is all resolved and viola the credits roll.

Shockingly another 10 movies based on these events have rolled out since.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get out!!!..., 8 Nov 2013
This review is from: The Amityville Horror [DVD] (DVD)
The Amityville Horror is about a large house on the coast of Long Island where newly weds George and Kathy Lutz and their three children move into the house that they hope will be their dream house but it ends up in terror.

Despite full disclosure by the real estate agent of the home's history, George and Kathy buy the house. George says, "Houses don't have memories," but they turn to their family priest Father Delaney who believes the house is haunted and performs an exorcism on the house.

But the evil spirit in the house causes him to become blind and makes him very ill.

George and Kathy with the help of another priest Father Bolen and a police detective they face the fears of the house, but not knowing the spirit is planning to possess George and then the children...

The story may or may not be true, but there is no denying the fact that the story is creepy and effective. James Brolin (who looks uncannily like Christian Bale) is great as Lutz, the man who is slowly being overwhelmed by the house.

It's not a scary film to watch, in fact it's quite funny in some scenes, but it's just the after effect the film has, and it makes you think. Not much happens on screen, it's the fact that Lutz poses such a threat throughout the movie is what makes the film so tense.

With great support from a very beautiful Kidder and Rod Steiger, the film is highly underrated, and is complimented by a very good remake too.

Plus it includes the funniest vomit scene ever committed to film.
