4.0 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul, 29 May 2001
This review is from: Hawthorne, Ca: Birthplace Of A Musical Legacy (Audio CD)
This album contains a generous selection of tracks from the mighty Beach Boys archives. Not everything here is essential. Early demo's are interesting but little more. The seemingly endless radio spots and band introductions are annoying after a while but wait...
...there are some great moments here. Especially the previously unheard Dennis Wilson song 'A Time To Live In Dreams' showing exactly how deep and underrated his talents were. It's a great song and truly moving especially when he sings '...forgive your brother...' in amongst the sound of heartbreak. The stereo version of 'Heroes And Villains' brings to life some of the musical sections that Brian stiched together and acapella versions of two 'Sunflower' songs really do melt the heart. Truly wonderful singing reminding us, as if it were needed, that here is the greatest vocal harmony group of all time.
A great purchase for all Beach Boy fanatics. For those merely curious it's better to start with 'Pet Sounds' or 'Sunflower' but this should hardly dissapoint in any case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great (for completists like myself), 14 May 2001
This review is from: Hawthorne, Ca: Birthplace Of A Musical Legacy (Audio CD)
I heard most of this record recently on a listening post and as always the Beach Boys harmonies sound astonishing through head phones.
Well here it is the latest in a long line of outtakes scraped from the depths of Capitol's vaults following on from Endless Harmony a few years back and it's not too bad. Collectors like myself often look forward to Smile album outtakes appearing on collections like these and thankfully there are a few choice cuts such as a hilarious radio spot introducing Vegetables. There is also an extended mix of Vegetables.
Personally a highlight is the Smile album outtake Your with me tonight vocal segment which sounds astonishing. There is plenty on offer here for the Beach Boy enthusiast however I would urge non enthusiasts to invest in Pet Souunds or any of the recently re-released 2-fer albums before this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant musical pastiche of the Beach Boys, 26 May 2001

Without doubt this is the best compilation ever to have been put together on the Beach Boys....or anyone else. It combines out takes, alternate takes and unreleased material with spoken word snippets (long enough to be interesting and not too long to prevent repeated listenings). It takes you on a journey through the consumate skills of Brian Wilson and the rest of the band. If you want to understand what it is that excites people about the Beach Boys just give it a listen. It is not just for completists....it will convert people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Californian Goldmine, 5 Mar 2013

Released after the "Endless Harmony" soundtrack, but closer to the "Pet Sounds" & "Smile" box sets, containing mostly demo/Alternative/instrumental/A Cappella versions of previously released tracks.
I always find these types of albums absolutely fascinating, showing the journey songs take from inception to completion.
Some of the highlights for me:

"Devoted to you"
A really pretty version of the Everly Brother song originally featured on "The Beach Boys Party!" album, but with all the silly party over-dubs removed.

"Time to get alone"
From the"20/20" album, but extended with added orchestral score & a cappella ending.

"A Time to live in dreams"
A previous unrealised heartfelt ballad by Dennis Wilson & Stephen Kalinich (who Dennis worked with on the "Friends" album). Recorded towards the end of 1968.

"Add some music"
The vocals on this song are so incredible you forget that all the rest the music has been removed.

The sound quality on this album is excellent, especially the new stereo remix, which are crystal clear, allowing you to hear all the vocals & musical instruments perfectly.
So if you the type of music fan who likes to take a peek behind the creative curtain, this record will be right up your street.
Dreadful album cover though, is that guy in the hat supposed to be Mike Love?

*The price of this CD seems to fluctuate between 6 to 25, so if you are interested in purchasing the album, I would advise you be a little patient & hang on till the price drops.*
