The overlooked pianist/composer/arranger Duke Pearson(1932-80) recorded this excellent album in New Jersey on November 24, 1964 with a stellar sextet including Donald Byrd(trumpet); James Spaulding(alto sax, flute); Joe Henderson(tenor sax); Bob Cranshaw(bass) & Mickey Roker(drums).
The six memorable tracks feature five Pearson originals and one from Donald Byrd. The music can be described as adventurous and imaginative hard bop with impressive solos from Henderson, Spaulding & Byrd spurred on by a superb rhythm section.
For some mysterious reason 'Wahoo!' has always been difficult to find but enthusiasts of BLUE NOTE hard bop should make every effort to hear this exhilarating music.
