I remember getting this CD around the same time as Total Eclipse, which was released roughly simultaneously. Whereas that album shows Tavener at his most progressive (and loud!), this CD is very quiet and tranquil.
The Tavener pieces are all world premieres, with two long-ish tracks, The Hidden Face and Nipson, being accompanied by the short - and intensely beautiful - Apokatastasis.
The other tracks are by Purcell (a marvellous arrangement of his Evening Hymn), John Ward and the near- anonymous Picforth. The pairing of C17th composers with Tavener works well, and reminds one that great music is timeless.
