5.0 out of 5 stars Elgar at Worcester
What a glorious sound the Organ at Worcester Cathedral makes!! This CD is a welcome reissue of one of very many recording made of this beautiful Organ, in this case, the late Harry Mudds "Abbey" recording of Donald Hunt, one of our most gifted Choirmasters, but also an excellent Organist. When this recording was made, the Organ had just been restored in 1978, and it shows...

2.0 out of 5 stars The heir to (Hugh) Blair disappoints in Elgar
Elgarians are in debt to Donald Hunt for his pioneering recordings of some of Elgar's minor choral music, and it would be good to say that these performances of Elgar's chief organ works are a fitting follow-up. After all, they're from Worcester Cathedral, a building closely connected with the master and where the first performance of the first Organ Sonata was given...

When this recording was made, the Organ had just been restored in 1978, and it shows itself as the ideal English Cathedral Organ, firmly suited to Elgar, and ringing out in Worcester Cathedral in fine style. A unique sound of one of our finest and most characterful instruments, played by a master! Currently, the organ awaits restoration again. This recording is therefore a fitting indication of how magnificent it will sound again when conservatively restored, and as a vehicle for English music, it will never be equalled.

Elgarians are in debt to Donald Hunt for his pioneering recordings of some of Elgar's minor choral music, and it would be good to say that these performances of Elgar's chief organ works are a fitting follow-up. After all, they're from Worcester Cathedral, a building closely connected with the master and where the first performance of the first Organ Sonata was given (badly) by Hunt's predecessor Hugh Blair in the early 1890s. Alas this is a deeply disappointing recording, bland and characterless in the manner of the worst Anglican organ-playing, with Elgar's music bereft of the colour and momentum which it needs. There are plenty of other recordings of this repertoire which are are more worthy of investigation. Tastes will vary but I suggest Stephen Cleobury for the sonatas and Christopher Herrick for the Vesper Voluntaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious sound - who needs the Frenchies?, 1 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Elgar Organ Music (Audio CD)
Just to back up what the previous reviewer said, I am lucky enough to own Donald Hunt's recording on vinyl and the sound is simply glorious, and testimony that English organ music need give nothing away to our continental cousins. Elgar at his most pensive, emotional, and (indeed) majestic. Wonderful to see this reissued.

This isn't a very well recorded performance which is a shame as there is far too little organ music around at the moment especially from Elgar.
