5.0 out of 5 stars A whirlwind of 9/8 beats and staccatto madness, 22 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Band Of Gypsies (Audio CD)
After catching a short set from the Taraf at the Radio 3 World Music Awards I was compiled to purchase this CD. I wasn't disappointed either.
A magical tour through the mind of the Taraf who are all professionals in making your feet tap to the rythmn. From the first track Dance of the Fireman there is no damp sqib let off instead an explosion occurs and by track 11 (Gambling Man) you'll have been through a whole rythmic spectrum of sound dominated by the unmistakable gypsy violin and cimbalom (hammered string percussion), with speed accordian and flutes. Ever the professional showmen. A high recommendation. This is a CD you must add to your collection

this is one of the wildest, noisiest and most exuberant pieces of music I have heard!! I thought The Who were great live, this bunch and their music is fantastic!!! What a night out it would be with this lot, imagine them touring in Ireland, Christy Moore might even be tempted back on stage with this lot. Absolutely brilliant, exuberant and powerful music, give us more!!!

...but I might just die laughing instead. These guys and their music are as mad as starlings - be careful how much you listen to them, because your feet might explode from too much tapping. Wonderful!

This cd features some highly enjoyable music that is very evocative of Romania and the Balkans. It is folk music with a delightfully odd eastern twist to it. One can almost imagine sitting around a gypsy camp fire, with lots of drinking and carousing going on and this music being played by the band as the fun goes on. There are some fantastic fast paced tracks, where you wonder how the musicians all keep time together and other more slow paced heartfelt songs like - A Gypsy Had a House. Excellent.
