A good retrospective,

This review is from: This Ain't My Time (Audio CD)
I got this because I'd heard a couple of Barracudas songs on punk compilation albums and thought it might be worth a punt. And it's not bad. The first thing to say is that, like the Vapors, the Barracudas are one of those bands who weren't really punk but seem to get put on punk compilations simply because they emerged at the same time. At their best ("Summer Fun", "I Can't Pretend") they sound like some great long-lost cross between the Beach Boys and the Ramones. The only trouble is that at 43 tracks, this compilation is perhaps a bit too long with a few filler tracks - if they'd made it a single CD, it might have made it a bit easier to listen to. Still, if you want to hear how surf-punk used to sound, this is maybe worth a look.

Mix Jan & Dean with the Ramones and let it develop with a hint of 60's Psychedelic and you've got the Barracudas. But it, you'll like it and it will make you smile even if some of the words are a little meloncholy. ANd then buy the Lurkers - Gods Lonely Men. |
