Was the Chevalier de Saint-Georges 'The Black Mozart'? Well, this seems to be the question everyone wants to ask...but it is probably the wrong one. Apart from skin tone, they were very different characters with very different lives. Saint-Georges had connections to the French nobility, was an accomplished swordsman and pursued a flourishing military career (until he ran foul of the revolutionary authorities). Can anyone picture Mozart fencing, much less leading a regiment into battle? No more than Cherubino, I would suggest!
Musically Saint-Georges was a very talented amateur (in the BEST sense of the word). How could he be anything else? His works for his own instrument, the violin, are certainly the most interesting, and these concertos bear comparison with the most accomplished works of his era; with the exception perhaps of the best of Viotti's, and Mozart's last two (which were, of course, relatively juvenile works). We don't find anything here as profound as Mozart's sinfonia concertante for violin and viola, nor should we expect to, but there is a pleasing melodic lilt to all these concertos, considerable virtuosity (which the violinist Takako Nishizaki executes beautifully) and some depth to the slow movements, notably the beautiful Largo of Op.5 No.2.
In summary, a disc well worth your listening time and the modest investment.
