5.0 out of 5 stars Love this movie
Throbs with hot sexual undertones, that are not in your face or overt. The acting can not be rated enough, if you haven't watched this film, go rent it and watch it now. Taylor and Newman at their best!

There is no denying that Taylor and Paul Newman are ideally cast and in their prime, while Burl Ives gives the oerformance of a lifetime as Big Daddy, who is dying from cancer. There is no denying that Taylor and Paul Newman are ideally cast and in their prime, while Burl Ives gives the oerformance of a lifetime as Big Daddy, who is dying from cancer. Judith Anderson pulls out all the stops as Big Momma, his wife, and Jack Carson and Madeleine Sherwood are terrific as Rick's envious sibling and his rapacious wife. But it does skirt delicately round, when not ignoring completely, the reason why Rick won't sleep with Maggie, the cat on that tin roof. In some ways it improves the play, which has a long opening scene with Maggie ranting, much cut here, but it remains classic Hollywood fudge - something that pretends to be what it is not. However Williams is well enough served, Taylor, a limited actress but good in the right part, and this was the right part, was at her loveliest, while Newman is simply sex on legs - eat your hearts out Brad Pitt and that man who currently plays 007.

This is a high-quality DVD of a classic film - yes, the screenplay fudges the Brick/Skipper relationship, but the actors are excellent (Burl Ives in particular delivers a much more rounded characterisation than usual) and Brick's nephews and nieces have been very well cast as repulsive little brats! Definitely worth the modest price. The "strangeness" of the packaging is that this is a double-sided DVD with the original Panavision version on one side and a 4:3 cropped version on the other - what on earth for? Just as well to have 2 versions in my case, as the 4:3 version froze at about 73 minutes. I thought I'd got an unlabelled pirate copy until I read the notes on the DVD box!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tenessee William's Broadway production brought to big screen, 18 Dec 2007
This review is from: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof [DVD] (DVD)
Paul Newman is great here and together with Elizabeth Taylor he has some great scenes. Burt Ives as Big Daddy has a nice performance as well and Madeleine Sherwood does a very good job by creating one of the most annoying characters I have seen in the movies. Her whining Mae is hated by everyone and we totally understand why. With a movie where there is this much talking and the story line is mostly talking about things rather than experience them the actors are very important and do a very good job.

I won't go into the differences to this and the original play that Tennessee Williams wrote as most people are surely aware of these, and the reason why, due to censorship laws. This is still a great movie and even if it was remade these days with the original story, chances are that it wouldn't be as good as this, as the actors are all top notch here.

With Burl Ives playing Big Daddy here as he did on Broadway his performance is finely polished. Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are both on sizzling form which is why they were both Oscar nominated for their roles. The whole film is brilliantly made and unlike today's blockbusters, as this is based on a play it is more dialogue intense than relying on special effects. Despite the story changes this is still gripping stuff and a family at loggerheads is still as rivetting today as ever.

If you like something with substance rather than lots of explosions, then this is something that you will want to see.

If only the famous film with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman hadn't been cut to pieces, that would be the first choice of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" on DVD, if only for Elizabeth Taylor as the supreme Maggie. Jessica Lange however runs her a close second. If its the Tennesse Williamms play you want, rather than a watered down Hollywood version, this is the one to go for. Recomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Orson Welles is great, but this is Burl Ives, 10 Nov 2000

In the film "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" the part of Big Daddy is played by Burl Ives and not Orson Welles. The film is somewhat notorious, not only for its allusions to homosexuality, but because Tennessee Williams was "persuaded" to change the ending of the play. Hollywood could just not accept the idea that anyone would turn down sleeping with Elizabeth Taylor (Maggie).

4.0 out of 5 stars No - watch the film first!, 29 Feb 2008
This review is from: Cat On A Hot Tin Roof [1958] [DVD] (DVD)
Great play and acting, but I disagree with the correspondent who indicated it's better to read the play first. The play is the real thing, hence I'd say it rises above the film, which as is well-documented has been censored. A pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning piece of film making, 7 May 2002
By A Customer
Paul Newman at his laconic best, watching his somewhat dysfunctional family competing for the attentions of the dying patriarch, wonderfully played by Burl Ives. The film positivly throbs with emotion; frustration, desire, jealousy pain - you name it, this film has it in spades. An absolute classic.
