I really fell head over heels in love with this film from its opening shot. This is often described as an Acid Western or Electric Western because it is a great mix of 60s and 70s styles, it feels like a great mix of Easy Rider, Led Zeppelin, The Blues Brothers and Spaghetti Westerns.

This film is pathetic, don't waste your money. The retailer on the other hand was excellent, one star for film, five for the seller!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitars and Six Shooters, Rock n Roll in the Wild West, 12 Jun. 2013

The first third of the film feels very Blues Brothers, two simple country guys get a gun and set out to become gunslingers by joining a gang of outlaws who play music better than robbing banks. When you see this gang riding over the hills with their electric guitars and drum kits hanging out the saddle bags it looks and feels so right despite the anachronisms. The film is filled with great images and ideas. When they meet the fastest gunslinger in the west they show him having a showdown then immediately going over to a drum kit and performing a fast drum solo to show what fast hands he has. The way the music fits into the story is really clever and well done and there is an amazing showdown towards the end where music is used to raise the tension in such a brilliant way that is unique to the genre.
The first half is light and fun in a Blues Brothers way but the second half is much darker, free spirited, and has the free love politics of the 70s in the style of Easy Rider or The Doors. There is a lot of what would be called "hippie" talk in this but it suits the movie.
Jon Rubinstein does a good job in the lead but it is Don Johnson as his best friend who steals the film. I didn't even recognize the Miami Vice actor till I researched the film after, he is really great in this film starting as an innocent youth and becoming a disillusioned killer.
This is a must see if you like the free spirited films of the 70s or you love movies where the music is just as important as the narrative or characters.

An absolute gem, the story was superbly ridiculous and the music made it a great film. This was great fun.

Billed as an electric western with a boast that if the Beatles had made a western this would be it this is a classic case of the lunatics taking over the asylum (or cameras) with liberal doses of LSD and hippy drivel. Basically the story is thus would be gunslinger buys gun, gets good and decides killing isn't for him. That is it. Don Johnson plays his best friend with a dumb smile and vaguely sexual overtones (at one point they profess their love). The filming is well done i'ill admit. But as for the rest? well Elvin Jones (from John Coltrane's band) is a top gun and plays a great drum solo and looks bemused by it all. Country Joe and the Fish play a gang called 'the crackers' and look pretty much out of it and The James Gang (the reason i brought this) mime badly. All in all for a snapshot of the sixties this is about as dreary as 'the strawberry statement' or 'the trip' and one last thing some of the tracks on the soundtrack album aren't in the film which is a real loss.
