Out of all the movies I've seen, this remains for me the most stunning in terms of visual spectacle regarding costume and set design; both are the most beautiful and disturbing designs and creations I have ever seen. Costumes (Eiko Ishoka) and set design (Tom Foden) are themselves worthy of Oscars (though in 2001, it was sadly only nominated for Best Makeup).

Besides the fact that it is incredible visually, the film also has one of Jennifer Lopez's stronger performances, and deals with an endlessly fascinating subject: the serial killer/psychopath. In this film, however, you experience the reality of the psycho's world, fully realised. It makes Hieronymus Bosch's paintings of the 15th century seem like gentle fairy-tale pictures in comparison.

Not only is it Jennifer Lopez's best film (likewise, Vince Vaughan's; the last time on film he looked sexy!), but also I think it is unique in terms of the quality and depth of how it presents the inner world of a particular serial killer psychopath. While the film situates itself within the serial killer genre - the quality of the imaginative visuals makes it stand out across all of the genres of horror, drama, thriller and the surreal. It is an amazing, brilliant film, and maximum tour de force acknowledgments must be given to Tarsem Singh, the director, and the original script writer, Mark Protosevich.

After hearing that this film was a visual feast, featured a complex plot and was genuinely disturbing, I just had to see it.

I was quite disappointed. Although it certainly does contain some beautiful scenes, as well as some sick ones, other parts just made me laugh. I'm not sure why this film is described as 'disturbing'. Jennifer Lopez's acting creaked like one of those mutant dolls. And Vince Vaughan has never been a favourite of mine. Perhaps with different casting this could have been an extremely different film - even achieving classic status, but as it is, I simply didn't engage with it emotionally.

However I'd still recommend it for the art direction alone - the purple cloak that billows out from the walls when Catherine visits the serial killer's mind, as well as the poor horse meeting its maker - they're two scenes that I won't forget in a hurry. I understand some of the sets and costumes were inspired by artwork or other films and even music videos.

See it (I'd rent rather than buy), but don't expect anything life-changing.

I thought this film was really good, especially Vince Vaughan. He was very convincing and if he hadn't been in the film, it might not have been so good. It kept me glued to it all the way through. I was a bit sceptical in the beginning with Jennifer Lopez in the mind of one of her patients until I realized that she was doing her job. After that it got better and better watching Vince Vaughan. He was very good, especially when he goes into her dream as well to rescue her.

It is officially a horror movie, but one with many outright beautiful, artful, well-designed scenes, referencing those from Dante's Inferno. You'll still be in for a scare, but I especially recommend this movie to 18+ viewers for it's beautiful art-scenes! I know, it may sound strange for a horror movie, but that is what this one sets apart IMHO from many others.
