Grind was the first single taken from Alice in Chains long awaited 3rd album. It was always going to be difficult to follow the masterpiece that was Dirt, and so followed proof. Grind is a crunching number that even 20 years down the line and without Layne Staley has rarely been played live.
The song infact is a Cantrell number, with Staley providing backing vocals. It is, as you would expect downbeat and downhearted stuff- the video is interesting though- and there is a nice middle 8 in here. However take the crunching guitars away and this really is second rate stuff especially from such a powerhouse band as AIC. Died and Get Born Again were superior tracks, which was nice given that they followed 3 years later, and proved at least that AIC still had some of the old magic left.

The standout track from their self-titled lp from the same year,'Grind' is a refeshingly dark return-to form for the Seattle grungers(now sadly defunct). Vocals are handled by Jerry Cantrell-lead guitarist, with the normal singer Layne Staley whispering in the background. The extra songs are of good value-an impressive live cut of'Love hate love' and the popular track 'nutshell' are included in this worthwhile package.
