5.0 out of 5 stars The Ecstacy of Jess Franco

2.0 out of 5 stars In German!
Beware-the UK version is in German with English subtitles-really makes sense to issue the German soundtrack version in the UK!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ecstacy of Jess Franco, 15 May 2006
This review is from: She Killed In Ecstasy [DVD] (DVD)
Which do you prefer: Citizen Kane or Touch of Evil? Breathless or Alphaville? Seventh Seal or Persona? Vampyros Lesbos or She Killed in Ecstasy? Difficult choices. Endless debate. The blissed out tripped out Vampyros Lesbos is a classic but She Killed in Ecstasy might actually be the better film. It shows what Franco could do when, for this brief period, he had a reasonable budget & a decent cast & crew. As 1970 kitsch it takes some beating: the clothes! the architecture! the interior design! Brilliant soundtrack of course. And this Franco film actually has an involving plot - it's a knife-wielding-woman-seeks-revenge movie (see Lady Snowblood, Kill Bill etc). There are a couple of sleazy lapses but hey - it is a Jess Franco film after all. The fantastic Soledad Miranda is perfect here: intense yet playful; emotionally sympathetic yet cruelly sadistic.... She was definitely Franco's muse & he takes an acting role in the film, setting up a finale in which he is mercilessly tortured by Soledad. Director tortured & killed by his lead actress! So much more daring than what Hitchcock got up to with Grace or Tippi. This Second Sight DVD is an uncut restoration of original negative, with subtitle options (all insane post-sync dubbing of course) & trailer. Excellent DVD edition of a work of true demented genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars sister work to Vampyros Lesbos and a better film, 11 Jan 2010
By
This review is from: She Killed In Ecstasy [DVD] (DVD)
Vampyros Lesbos is a classic: a beautiful, stylish masterpiece that surpasses any 'euro sleaze' conventions and this (it's companion piece) surpasses even this high water mark.

The same conventions are in place (similar cinematography, the same composers working on the soundtrack, Soledad Miranda) but is more coherent as a film, uses the conventions of traditional film making to show it's limitations.

And then there's Soledad. Soledad stalks through this film full of hate and fragility, pain in every glance. The beauty of Soledad becomes, in this film, problematic as our admiring gaze has to ignore her pain to see her as a sexual object and, by this, our reactions to the film become problematic.

Recomended for Jess Franco fans who argue he's not just a sleaze director he's actually very, very talented. Watch with Vampyros Lesbos, Justine, Jack the Ripper and the mighty Barbed Wire Dolls to see a director at his best/ worst (depending on your point of view.)

is great in this film - she is so sexy. The 70s style is fantastic. The story is good with a great soundtrack. Well worth buying.

Very watchable Euro-revenge thriller from prolific Director Jess Franco and starring Soledad Miranda. If you want to know the plot check out some of the other reviewers or IMDB. Good remastering job from Second Sight although perhaps some relevant extras would have been nice. I would encourage you to purchase 'Vampyros Lesbos' also.

1.0 out of 5 stars An error on my part to . . ., 2 Feb 2009

. . have ordered 'she killed in ecstacy' which, if anything horrified me.
The doctor Johnson lacks credibility for someone worth avenging, and besides I am personally against the experiments he carried out; this subject is too serious to be treated like this. Maybe my disappointment was also caused by remembering "The bride was in black" with the excellent Jeanne Moreau as the avengiste, and (on the subject of genetic experiments) " Le tour du monde" french version of an episode of the Silent Witness Serie with Amanda Burton where the caracters are credible.
Then of course there is Almodovar's Matador where crime and death are almost aesthetic cinematographically.
