4.0 out of 5 stars A quality album to be discovered amongst the quantity., 31 Dec. 2000
This review is from: Red Sky (Audio CD)
McTell fans will understand the feeling. A superb live performer when relying on just his voice and guitar to delight but a tendency to over elaborate on studio recordings. This album is no exception. Those tracks that work best are simply presented with McTells mellow voice supported in perfect harmony by his sublime guitar playing skills. There is a great album here, just give it time and search for it amongst the nineteen tracks (& one hidden bonus track). In the Dreamtime rates with the very best of his work, an aboriginal concept that is treated with beautiful sensitivity. Other highlights are Easter Lilies and Saucers, both fine examples of McTells story writing skills that are unmatched by any other British singer/songwriter. Red Sky at Night concludes the listed tracks and is a fitting reminder of McTells soleful voice and poetic lyrics. Stay listening for a fine example of guitar playing on the hidden bonus track that reaffirms McTells standing as a much respected musician who deserves wider recognition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensuous massage for the ears!, 25 Feb. 2001
This review is from: Red Sky (Audio CD)
I am relatively new to the musical talents of Ralph McTell. I bought this album on the strength of a review I read in Q-magazine (I think!). Although there is not a bad track on the album those which standout are the ones with the simplest arrangements - simply vocals and guitar. They can be thought-provoking to a level rarely found in music. Songs like Easter Lillies, Saucers and I`ll Keep This With Mine can conjure up such vivid images that they could almost have been written for you and you alone. Whimsical breaks to the mood are provided by Icarus Survived The Fall and I Love Driving West, amoungst others. In short, this album is a joy to listen to and a potential firm favourite for anyone who likes "pucker" music! Keep 'em coming!!
