This review is from: Desert Road (Audio CD)
My only sighting of the Wayward Sheiks was at Bishopstock 2001 when they were projected from the lunchtime snooze slot to virtual top billing at 10pm when Johnny Winter was too unwell to play. (Good to hear he is now much better).
My first impression was that players from four different groups on the way to other gigs had been hijacked and pushed on stage to perform. This was their appearance not their playing. Admittedly the Nigerian brothers on drums and bass were similar, but Salah Dawson Miller looked straight out of the Wild West, Justin Adams a biker and Andy Cox on a rare outing from his daytime job at the undertakers.
However, the music soon took over and went from interesting to fascinating, as well as entertaining. Justin's playing of various types of stringed instruments, some of which were guitars, was excellent and Salam Dawson Milller's percussion breathtaking.
I was therefore delighted that this CD faithfully relected the range of their performance, with Wayward and Majnoun the highlights.
This is a CD to chill to late at night with the last bottle of claret or the first of brandy.
Buy it quickly and enjoy it now in this context, before Wayward becomes the backdrop to Goal of the Month!
