5.0 out of 5 stars The gates of doom, 27 Aug 2004

My initial route to this band came from the link with Lee Dorian's previous band, Napalm Death. Cathedral are however a very different kettle of fish. Dorian's change from grindcore grunts in the Napalm era, to the dirty doom style he now uses are a mile apart. As soon as I heard Cathedral I was instantly hooked, the music is slow and heavy as hell, the lyrics are cool, even the album artwork is a triumph, helping to make their work an all round superb package. Serpent's gold is a good starting point for the newcomer, and will no doubt inspire many to look up the back catalogue. And for the already hooked the rarities, on the second CD will provide plenty of new material. The inlay contains all you ever need to know about the band history courtesy of an extensive interview with Lee. This is simply a great record!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent rarities compilation, 10 Dec 2005

Serpent’s Gold follows the same template as similar Earache compilations from Napalm Death and Godflesh, with a double CD set evenly split between a ‘greatest hits’ compilation on disc one, and a rarities disc on disc 2. Personally I can never understand who the ‘greatest hits’ disc is aimed at with extreme metal bands, as unlike mainstream pop/rock bands I can’t imagine a huge audience of casual fans who only want the ‘hit singles’, but I suppose if you’ve never heard any Cathedral before this could make a reasonable sampler…
For the already converted Cathedral fan the first disc will get one token spin before the rarities disc is pounced on. On here are 4 completely ‘new’ previously unreleased studio songs, the highlight of which is the epic 12-minute Schizoid Puppeteer, with the remainder of the tracks divided between rare demo and live versions of already released album songs – including an early version of Magic Mountain with a different beginning and totally different lyrics, and live and demo versions featuring those Cathedral line-ups that didn’t last long enough to get in the studio for albums proper. All worthwhile stuff for the long-term fan, but probably of little interest to any newcomers.
Good stuff, but by it’s nature this will really only appeal to two distinct types – those who have absolutely everything else released by the Cathedral and who are picking it up for the rarities, and those who have absolutely nothing at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping the sabbath dream alive?, 5 Aug 2004
This review is from: The Serpent's Gold (Audio CD)
Excuse the corny title for this review, but it is true. If Black Sabbath ever got back together with Ozzy and wrote new stuff, this is what they would have to compete with. Well this and Wino's work of course. This is prime doom. Slow, heavy and groovy. The first CD is a best of the earache years. Ok, so it does miss out on quite a few classics, why there is only one track from Caravan Beyond Redemption & Supernatural Birth Machine I don't know, but this is a great place to start if like me, you missed out on Cathedral the first time round. There is not a weak track on the wholoe album. It is just great song after great song. The second cd has demos, unrealesed tracks and live stuff. The Old Oak tree is a lost classic that was written for The Etherial Mirror, but did not end up on the album. It is an absolute peach of a song. Since I got this I have started getting all the albums. I am hooked and if you love doom, you will aswell. I would also recommend Spirit Caravan, St Vitus, The Hidden Hand as Wino is a true genius, as well as The Obssesed and Pentagram. So if you are sick of the same old same old, do youself a favour and get this CD. It will open your mind to a whole other world od music and you will wonder why you did'nt do so sooner.
