This is a ravishing disc! Although seemingly ignored by UK critics on release, the American reviewer in "Fanfare" magazine quite rightly went into overdrive in describing it. I figure that the recording was made for the Erato label during the period when Warner Classics went into a kind of meltdown by closing that label (and Teldec), as it was recorded in 2001 but was not released until 2004.
Anyway, what we have here are recordings of orchestral songs from Grieg and Sibelius, none of which I was familiar with. If you like the much better-known orchestral songs of Mahler, you are sure to like this. The radiant Karita Mattila, the Finnish soprano, gives an idiomatic performance and is ably supported by Sakari Oramo during his tenure with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Wonder of wonders, the CD comes with notes and translations!
Very highly recommended.
