5.0 out of 5 stars This blows away "Failures For Gods". A masterpiece of death., 10 Dec 2001

This review is from: Close to a World Below (Audio CD)
"Close To A World Below" is by far the best thing Immolation have done. So many things are right about this album. As usual, the backbone of the music is the absolutely incredible drumming. If you think Frost or Sandoval is the best, you may well change your mind after listening to the apparently seventeen-armed Alex. His amazing control and originality (and of course technical mastery) really has to be heard.
The guitars this time around are still the twisted, halting, churning wall of pain they was before, except with CTAWB the focus has been shifted slightly to the more ambient side. Some of the chords and harmonies they torture out of the guitars are really fantastic. The sound is fairly bass-heavy and not very biting, but it creates a highly appropriate 'fiery' sound (as opposed to the classic black metal 'ice'). They haven't lost their taste for false harmonics or the classic 'muted E, odd chord, muted E, odd chord' style of riff (which they have perfected more than ever this time).
The vocals seem at first glance to be nothing special, but they're delivered with passion and are deeper and throatier (and often clearer) than the usual growl. The timing is also interesting, not always singing in precise time with the music but creating their own rhythm.
The whole thing comes together beautifully. Buy this at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Death Metal at it's best, 7 Oct 2011

Bob and Ross truly are the King and Hanneman of Death Metal, overlooking that Ross Dolan is the bassist. Bob Vigna's guitar drive really adds a lumbering heavy stomp even when playing the high notes, that being said there is a clear elegance to his playing without any fret-wanking one might find in a copycat, cram as many notes as possible into a solo tech-death band. There's a clear menace and a scathing, contempt-filled hatred for Christianity in Ross' words evident in his perfectly articulated growl, truly an archetype voice in death metal. Just listen to "Father, You're Not A Father" and you'll understand. There are bands that sing (or growl) about someone else's subject matter to fit in a scene, and there are bands that do that of their own subject matter, then beyond that there is Immolation. Ross is absolutely compelling, there is no BS, no Cannibal Corpse Kitsch imagery to elicit a sense of disgust, no, it is neither present nor needed here. From the rhetorical question; "And you said, Jesus was coming?" to the closing notes of "Close to a World Below", you will either be transfixed, or you are not a death metal fan. Simple as that.

This is the very definition of perfect death metal.

Awesome heavy riffs, fast technical drum and bass work, excellent vocals, memorable catchy lyrics. There is not a single flaw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best death metal album ever, 27 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Close to a World Below (Audio CD)
What can I say? I am very picky with death metal usually being more the black metal fan myself, but Immolation are the cream of the crop, undoubtedly one of the best death metal bands along with the likes of Morbid Angel and Nile at their best and Mithras, and this album is flawless, simply brilliant...the composition, the riffs, the lyrics, the production, the mood....absolutely everything on this album is perfect and this is an utterly unique album and one of the few genuinely dark and evil sounding death metal albums, along with this band's other great work and certain other "murky" death metal bands like portal and impetuous ritual...A must buy for death metal bands!
