5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius
First of all, the New York influence and Patti Smith comparison has been much overstated by now; PJ Harvey has repeatedly said that Smith has never musically inspired her and that the vocal likeness is coincidental. That out of the way, I must now heartily endorse Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea – a truly great rock album and one of my personal...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Very Good Songs But A Mixed Bag Overall
Typical that PJ's most praised album is also her least interesting. Very clearly a "New York" album much of it sounds like Patti Smith retreads - without any of the spark that Patti brought to her best records (more like retreads of Patti's 80's AOR sadly - at times you start expecting PJ to sing People Have The Power), for that blame the ultra-slick production and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, 2 Aug 2001
All of the other PJ Harvey albums I have or have listened to have always had a few songs songs that are just phnur. Until now she hasn't really hit her peak, just danced around the perimeter, but now she has hit the mark and she has exploded into a goddess of rock.this album is fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year?, 12 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This is the album that won the Mercury Prize 2001 and for once they got it right. If you have never bought a PJ Harvey album and want to test the water, this is the one to get. "Stories.." puts her at the top of the pile of rock acts in the world today with excellent production too. She sounds not unlike Patti Smith but her songwriting is of a higher standard. Anybody who likes her earlier work will find much to enjoy here and this album should also gain her a deserved wider audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back on form, thank God!, 9 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I've always been a big PJ fan but it was with regret that I had to avoid her last two albums like the plague... I thought she'd seriously lost it! But I needn't have worried - Polly's come back in style for this masterpiece album. I haven't stopped listening to this since I bought it. Seriously, if you don't own anything by Polly yet, buy this first!
PS: The duet with Thom Yorke is incredible and has inspired me to buy my first ever Radiohead album just to hear more of that voice...

5.0 out of 5 stars back on form, 2 Feb 2001
By
Singlespeeder (somewhere in the north of england) - See all my reviews
while nothing that p.j.harvey has done would ever get less than 4 stars in my book, this marks a return to form that she hasn't touched since dry.
all those influences that had the potential for more (especially the john parrish collaborations) seems to have blunted an edge. you can detect that influence but the edge is back.
still makes the cat prick up here ears and leave the room though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be careful, 3 Feb 2001

I bought this album after many recomendations, and hearing a few tracks on radio 1. First impression - POOR. There are only a few decent tracks on this album. The guitar parts but the vocals - pretty poor. Near the beginning of the album I thought my cd player was skipping and it was making a horrible sound (yeah ie yeah ie yeah) but it was just the music. Since then I have learnt to enjoy it a bit more but I suggest that you don't buy this unless you are absolutely sure! Anthony,

4.0 out of 5 stars Continuing Brilliance, 19 Dec 2000

PJ Harvey's latest offering is certainly one of the best releases this year. Perhaps PJ's greatest asset is her consistently strong vocals backed by superb music. It's not quite as good as the amazing Is This Desire? but is well ahead of the competition. The final track The Floating captures best the experience of listening to her latest album even if there are some sharks beneath the surface.

1.0 out of 5 stars Back to her roots, 11 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Reading the reviews posted on Amazon and listening to the album I get confused because it is, surprisingly, just a remake of her excellent album "Dry" of... 1993! It seems that, along with U2's latest, she is getting back to her roots. If that is all she could extract musically and creatively from living in New York in the last year, then I would conclude that is a lot of hype for nothing. If you still want to listen to PJ,start with "Dry" and this latest is not at all compulsory.
