5.0 out of 5 stars Made in heaven, 28 Nov 2001
This review is from: Made in Medina (Audio CD)
Steve Hillage and Rachid Taha have been collaborating to great effect since the early 90's and each collaboration gets better and better. Hybrid music which makes you dance sing and think- cross techno with Zepp metal intensity and acoustic North African instruments and the timeless beauty of Rai and Taha's fantastic voice- this is music of the here and now crossed with centuries old tradition.
I've been buying world music and Hillage albums for the last 20 years and believe me it doesnt get much better than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic, 21 July 2001

This review is from: Made in Medina (Audio CD)
I read about this months agon and now wish I'd bought it on import it is that good ! I'd heard Rachid Taha on the 'Arabesque' complilation and he was very enjoyable, but here he moves from fusion grooves back to Algerain Rai in such easy steps that you are taken with him all the way, and want go go out and find more of it. The 'blurb' on the front mentions Led Zeps 'Kashmir' and they are right on at least one occasion. I suspect, however, that Rai used strings in a much more 'Kashmir' way a long time before Led Zep, and Rachid simply reclaims it. A great album to both groove to and listen. Steve Hillage plays guitar and produces. Fantastic: nothing more nor less. Album of the summer if not the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars rachid taha at his best, 6 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Made in Medina (Audio CD)
Rachid Taha is the most adventurous of North Africa's Westward-looking pop musicians, and Made in Medina is his best release yet. Forget "world music" -- this is rock, full of jagged guitars and clobbering beats. It has the sure-footedness of a man who knows exactly where he's going, and it's his first album to capture the excitement of his live shows, thanks to his long-time producer, Steve Hillage, who co-wrote many of the songs. If you know Taha only from the "1, 2, 3 Soleils" video and CD, this is a much looser, rowdier incarnation, and all the better for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild, electrifying Arabic fusion, 9 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Made in Medina (Audio CD)
Rachid Taha's glorious last album, Diwan, was a tribute to the great north African songwriters of the past, a mixture of cover versions of classic Algerian, Moroccan and Egyptian songs and his own songs in similar styles. With Made in Medina he fuses this awareness of his roots with punk attitude, cutting social comment and ferocious danceability: the album's influences range from the Clash to Led Zeppelin to techno. Whether you like rai, dance music or rock, Made in Medina has something for you. Five seconds of the first track was enough to make up my mind that I couldn't do without it. And don't miss a chance to see Rachid Taha live: he's electrifying.
